Rail Digital Photo Guide
This page has bee created to share useful links to products and concepts that were discussed in my clinic for prototype digital photography at the recent WPM meet. This webpage will be updated in time to included more helpful links and tips, so check back often.
Thumbsplus editing software, available from Cerious Software. This is my preferred photo cataloguing software that supports IPTC, advanced file renaming, basic editing, and has a user database function that is fully compatible with MS Access.
BetterJPEG is a utility that allows for lossless JPEG cropping, and nearly lossless JPG stamping. This program takes advatage of the design of the JPEG file structure, as the image is made up of independant block of 8x8 pixel segments. Changes can be made to one 8x8 block without altering the data of any others, similarly blocks can be removed from the file without effecting any others.
Nikonview is a utility provided for Nikon cameras that provides automated downloading from the camera and digital media. This appliction only support Nikon cameras, but a similar application that can be used by any camera type is Downloader Pro. While I've never used this application, it is highly rate and provides many helpful tools like IPTC input during download, advanced renaming, and image rotation.
If you're looking for some info on digital cameras, there's a number of good websites out there, but my favorite is DPReview.
Another helpful site is Rob Galbraith's Digital Photography Insights. This site is geareg more towards advanced topics for pro protogs, is certainly helpful for anyone looking to be on the high end. His CF/SD memory card database is good for finding the fastest cards for your camera. I will note however, that unless you shoot lots of RAW files, nearly all of the latest SLR models feature buffers that negate the need for the fastest of cards.
