Half of the kids are scheduled for rhythm class in the morning. Seth was asked to arrive 15 minutes before the rest of the class, but sooner or later Mimi, Lulu, Butch, Kevin R., Seamus, Kevin K., Heidi, Andy and Drew arrive in cabin C for their first class.

Jamie sits by the door and tells the kids to join her on the bleachers as Alyssa welcomes everyone and explains this class is going to get everyone to understand rhythm and how the drums really set the pace and keep everyone in the same timing of music.

Seth has a little fun and really rips into a quick patterned burst of drumbeats, cymbals and flying drumsticks to show off his snazzy drumming abilities.

"That was nice Seth, but let's try something a little less complicated." Alyssa smiles as she explains rhythm, beat and tempo to the children. Some of them already have learned this, but it is a good review, and for the beginners it helps them understand how the music's speed and patterns are understood.

The children listen attentively with Jamie thumping her hands on the bleachers so they can really feel the patterned pounding that matches the steady beat of the drums.

After Alyssa leads Seth through an entire song to show the kids how it really sets the pace, she tells each child to go to the table and pick up a drum, then come back to the bleachers. They are going to practice keeping the beat in sync with Seth. She says "No matter what you play, the drum is going to tell you how fast to play and what the rhythmic pattern should be."

Each of the kids sits back down with their drum and with Alyssa's help tries to match Seth's repeating beat. Alyssa corrects each kid when they are a little off, or compliments Heidi when she is matching perfectly, until each of the children can match the same rhythm for several different patterns. They learn the difference between 4/4 and the rarely used 11/13 (which hardly any of them can match). Even on 7/8ths beat the kids do pretty well, practicing beats for most of the morning before Alyssa and Jamie tell them they have freetime now for the next hour until lunchtime.
