Paul and Jennifer meet for the first time since being dropped off the night before and Jennifer squeals and jumps up to hug her brother. She plants a big wet kiss on his cheek as he laughs and tells her to calm down.
He takes back his cowboy hat which he'd given her to stop her crying yesterday. "You'll be okay tonight? right?" he asks. Jennifer smiles and nods. "Unh huh. I was just a little homesick and didn't want to miss you." She hugs him again then they take a seat on the bleacher as the others kids come in.

Everyone who didn't take rhythm class first thing in the morning has it at 11 AM when the other kids go off for free play. They are welcomed into the room by a girl who introduces herself as Uschi, pronouncing it like sushi. "This is my eighth year at band camp," she says, "so if you like it this year feel free to come back again next year." She has Nelson sit down at his bongo drum, and Brian warms up at his large drum set as Uschi explains a little bit about the concept of rhythm and tempo.

As the boys practice together and loosen up their wrist muscles, Uschi tells them what she plans to do. First the kids will tap their feet to the drumming until they can all "feel" the rhythm of the music.

Paul, Kusafiri, Jennifer, Lenis, Lila, Kelly, Maggie, and Ari all listen attentively and start trying to tap their feet and match the drummers. Maggie starts to absentmindedly whistle a few times, but Uschi kindly stops her each time.

When most of the kids seem to keep the tempo fairly well, Uschi points them all to a table of maracas, saying "Let's see if your hands and toes can BOTH match the drummers now! Everyone go get a maraca and shake it in time with the tempo!" Tsch Tsch Tsch... The maracas shake and shimmy as each child tries to start and stop them to match the drumbeats.

As Uschi leads them all, Nelson and Brian keep the beat perfect and help the kids stay in sync.

"By George, you've got it!" Uschi tells them, smiling and letting them shake the maracas for a few more minutes before telling the kids they can go off to lunch now.
