In the project room the first class is getting underway. Janine is showing the children how to do simple wood painting. Seven children are here for the class; Nelson, Butch, Jennifer, Regan, Maggie, Seth and Heidi.
Across the room is free play where kids can come and make up their own projects with what is set out. Today the free play tables are set up with crayons and drawing paper. Ready to color are Maria, Chase, Kusafiri, Heather, Brian, Austin, and Amanda.

Janine tells each child to sit in front of the item they'd like to paint. Most of the girls choose flower vases. Butch picks a cookie jar and Seth picks a tall canister. Regan picks a nice big bowl.

Janine has the children lightly dust off their items so the paint will take properly. Between each pair of kids is a waterglass to clean their brushes and palettes to share.

Janine squeezes out lots of colors onto palettes for the children to use and she shows them the vase she painted earlier. She shows the kids how to make simple shapes like flowers, or geometric lines and patterns.

The kids watch Janine a little while then start to paint their projects. It is tricky at first but the kids catch on. Jennifer and Maggie both cover their vases with big bright flowers while Seth paints long red vines on his canister.

Every child has a different style and color preferences. Nelson likes bright blues for his vase, painting in wavy lines and circles. Butch however chose a deep dark blue to make sailboats and clouds on his cookie jar. At the other end of the table Regan makes wiggly pink worms with his brush.

Janine encourages the children, helping them with technique and a little clean up work when they make a mistake. By the time class is over everyone's item is finished, and each child has made something both lovely and unique.

I will edit and upload the photos and stories as fast as I can so check back often for new stuff.
