Dolls of the World
1982 Version 1

The Dolls of the World India doll came out in 1982 and had 2 versions. I am not sure
which was the 1st release and which was the second, or whether they were produced
in 2 different countries as is often the case, but I am calling this one version 1.

She has black hair and dark brown eyes and wears a red lehanga (skirt) with
matching dupatta(scarf). The material is a soft cotton with threads of a shimmery
metallic dark red striping it. Both lehanga and dupatta are trimmed with gold
braid. Her choli is a gold net material and very pretty. She wears translucent
yellow earrings, necklace and round ring.

Differences between version 1 and 2 of the 1982 Dolls of the World India
  • HAIR
Version 1 has black hair and in slightly less volume. Version 2 has dark brown hair
    and slightly more volume.
  • EYES
The eyes of version 2 are slightly larger and the makeup lining the eyes is darker
beneath the eyes and comes to a sharper point, making the eyes look more
doe-shaped, whereas version 1 eyes look more rounded.
  • BLUSH
Version 1 has much more blush and of a brighter color.
  • CHOLI
Version 1 has a choli of an open loose net material, textured with threads of gold
woven into it. Version 2 has a choli of a solid gold lamé fabric, smooth to the touch.
(same material as used in the 1981 Golden Dream Barbie).
  • LEHENGI/DUPATTA
The red cotton fabric is identical in both versions, but the threads striping it is a
matte dark metallic red in version 1 and a bright metallic red in version 2.

She has black hair in a single braid and light brown eyes with a bronze eye
shadow. She wears a bright pink fuschia sari in a silky material trimmed
with a border of red and yellow with gold braid. She wears a matching choli

round gold ring.

I am using very generalized definitions of the Indian garments summarized from the FashionIndia website. For the best information and Indian clothing references, check out Fashion India's Glossary of Indian Fashion and India Tourism & Travel .

CHOLI: A tight-fitting short, bodice-like blouse.

GHAGHRA: A flared skirt, made up of several triangular gored pieces stitched together.

KURTA: A collarless or mandarin collar tunic, slightly loose-fitting garment for outer wear, often with a round neck, of knee-length or even longer, with side-slits at the hem and generally flared skirt.

LUNGI: A skirt like garment, made from a long straight cloth. Originally worn by men, today it is worn by men and women. Simply put, it is a short length of material worn around the thighs like a sarong.

LEHANGA: A skirt. Worn generally in combination with an odhani.

ODHANI/ORHNI or DUPATTA: A wrapping veil/cloth, worn tucked in at the waist and wrapped around the back and over the head, the free end being draped over the shoulder.

SALWAR-KAMEEZ: Salwars are pyjama-like trousers drawn tightly in at the waist and the ankles. Over the salwars, women wear a long and loose tunic known as a kameez.

SARI: A single length of material, rectangular and five to six yards in length. The style, color and texture of this cloth varies. Can be worn in several ways and its manner of wearing as well as its color and texture are indicative of the status, age, occupation, region and religion of the wearer.
