I reset the page so feel free to read last week's chat to pick up where you left off, and don't forget, no fires, not hunting/fishing, collecting marine life, and dress modestly...:) aren't missionaries great?

the free food hunting continues for sunday, you can find what you need, but not more than the minimum comfortable food level... PS. all that fruit and food you buried? the sand crabs got it :( they didn't get into the coconuts, but any buried fruits got nibbled and eaten.

You awake to hear very faint echoes of what can only be a very experience church choir, in fact on Kosrae the church choirs can be heard around the entire island and are known to be quite moving. They have adapted the traditional New England hymns into a more South Pacific islander pattern, with men and women singing separate parts in a call and response style, or singing togther blended into complex harmonies. You can't hear it perfectly, but what you do hear is breathtaking.

The morning is sunny and bright and the waters are crystal clear.

It is probably too late to get dressed and get there in time, but maybe we can go and follow the singing to find out where it is and go next week. After praying, Pierre goes over to check on the food and discovers what the crabs did. He then heads to the Jungle looking for more food. He is upset that idea wasted all of that food.

Moon says "Won't the bugs just be drawn to the leaves? Why don't we tie them up in the netting and hang them from a branch. That way the crabs can't get them. That';s what I did our first day here with our open dry goods." She points to the netted bundle hanging from a branch by the firepit.

is one of the barrels empty? that would be perfect sized to save at least a few bananas and other fruits and we can keep that under ground, I wouldn't think that any little critters could get into it...

From Colleen, just a reminder of what you had when you got to camp: After checking what was divided among the packs and what was in the box, you have 1 bottle of multivitamins:500 tablets, 1 bottle ibuprofen: 100 tablets, 1 bottle sunscreen PF 16, not a big bottle, so use sparingly, 1 pound bag of rice in a cloth bag, 4 small wooden barrels of instant oatmeal, plain, unsweetened, each barrel looks to hold about 25 cups of instant oatmeal, 1 bar plain white soap, 1 small brown bottle of betadine for scrapes and cuts, 1 emergency flare, 2 large plastic water bottles (only 1 full one left) 2 liters each, 1 round canteen (holds 2 quarts), 1 large blue water tank (holds 2 gallons), 1 large green tarp semi-waterproof, 1 large rope net, 1 large cooking pot, 1 compass, 1 small shovel, 1 knife, 1 map with locations marked for campsite, tribal council, and challenge beach, 1 large wooden crate with separate lid:

NOTE: each barrel holds 25 cups of oatmeal and 4 barrels are to last you 8 weeks. If one barrel is already empty you guys are in for some tough times later if you aren't careful. Also if you opened all of the barrels to ration as I think someone had posted you also find that once opened the containers do get humid from having the seal broken in this climate. the oatmeal has a chance of going moldy once a barrel has been opened so I'll assume you didn't open all the containers :).

one last thing since you are checking all the supplies, the vitamins bottle was never opened (hint hint) so far, and the soap is nowhere to be found...

But, I'm open to any ideas. I think we should ALL start taking vitamins and using a little sunscreen when we are out in the sun in the afternoon. I never saw any soap since we have been here, I wonder if someone left it down by the stream. Maybe we should go look for that too."

to Ms Mastermind Colleen: That was me that rationed(or tried to) the oatmeal. But I only opened the one container. I after the first one was opened, we poared it into the large cooking bowl and tried to figure out how much we could cook each day. Since we didn't have anything to put the individual days into for storage, I put it back in the barrel. We should neever cook more than 2 handfulls a day. Sorry for confusing yoy. But I didn't open the other barrels. By the way how big is the opening on the lagre water storage bottle, large enough to put fruit in???

Hey I don't know about the rest of you but I really would like to find the soap. None of us have bathed in a week and I am sorry but we stink. We all could use a bath but we don't want to bathe in the place that we get our water, to drink. I have in the past bathed in ocean water. It makes your skin feel weird, from the salt water. but if we can't find the soap we will have to reach in the water and grab sand and use it for soap. It will knock off the dirt. And that might make us smell better. I didn't mean to hurt any ones feelings but we do need to take a bath and wash our clothes the best way we can.

From Colleen: nope sorry, the water jugs have small openings...

that's why the best rule of thumb is not to pick the fruit until you are ready to eat it. also, you probably don't want to keep it in backpacks unless your clothes are elsewher. anyone who has been putting their clothes in their backpacks wet from swimming or the rain will start to notice mildew. you need to watch things carefully in such a wet climate. If you reread last week's chat you'll notice where I first mentioned that the soap was missing....

"Don't cry Aggie, it could have happened to anyone, but lets make a deal. If something like that happens again to our stuff, we tell each other immediately, and maybe we can fix the problem. If you dropped it in the water, it has probably disolved. But MAYBE it was that Ivory stuff that floats, lets hope. If you were in the stream maybe it floated to the top and got washed up on the side of the stream. If you were in the surf, maybe it got washed up down the beach somewhere."

"Ms Colleen is right about the mildew, my mom lived on some islands for a while and she said her clothes and body never dried very good. Thats why I always hang my clothes up on the bushes to dry before I put them up. I think most of us do that. "Hey Pierre, who you callin stinky? hahaha I know you couldn't be talking about me. :)"

Well I guess we know know when is the best time to hunt for them. HA HA" Trey pryes the critter from his toe since Pierre is sound asleep. He goes back to the baech and throws him in the water and yells, " We'll be looking for you for lunch tomorrow feller. It's time for me to go to bed too, but I'm getting worried about Aggie & Marisa, they haven't made it back from the stream yet. I'll wait up just a little longer for them. Hum, I'm really gettin tired.

Trey is having a bad dream that he is being bitten by bunches and bunches of crawdads, he tosses and turns. Then he wakes realizing he really was being bitten, but by sandfleas or somethin else. He checks, Yeah, Aggie & Masissa are back. Hum, wish thet would have woke me when they came back. Trey pulls fdown his sleeping bag, shakes it out and crawls in. I have no idea what time it is or how long I get to sleep in my comfy sleeping bag. Oh no, I'm already itching from all this bites. Scratch, scratch.

Trey wakes up. Scratch, scratch. He sees some of the girls in the water. Pierre is still asleep. Trey gets up changes into his swimsuit, and starts putting logs on the fire. Hopefully Pierre will wake up soon to start the fire. I've got to get him to show me how to do that so I can help more. He grabs his fishing pole and head for his favorite fishing rock down the beach. Hum, gotta look for bait, oh there are some sandcrabs, they should work.

Got the fire going and is boiling half a coconut. When the water comes to a full boil, Pierre removes the pan from the fire.

After the water cools a bit. You can see cocunut oil on top of the water. Pierre takes a shirt and barely puts into the pan to collect the oil. once he has some oil on the shirt he hobbles to the jungle.

Pierre sets down the shirt and wanders down to the beach looking for those tastey oyster like critters.

Moon spends the day enjoying the rain and using the wet sand to build a huge sandcastle far enough on the beach that the waves shouldn't wash it away too soon. She makes it with tons of turrets and parapets and a tall wall around it.

Sur, I love building sandcastles. My big brother once build one with a breadloaf pan and made bricks and walls and made it big enough for me to stand in. It didn't last too long though."

Moon watches the rain dissolve part of one long wall. "This one won't either but it is fun while it does last."

Some of the flowers growing wild on the island inclue hibiscus, wild ginger flowers (hmmm maybe check the roots of those!) and the typical island flowers, some bird of paradise blooms, hyacinth...it's a botanist's dream...

I just can't even image what it would be like to swim with them." "I think my surf board would have been a lot handier here than my soccer ball, Oh well." Trey sighs. "Sorry guys, I haven't had any luck fishing today, but it sure is purdy here."

"Yeah Aggie, I love to surf, I'm from San Diego and everyone there surfs. If I had my board, I could paddle everyone out(separately) to get a closer look at the dolphins. And yes I could try to teach everyone to surf. I surf with my dad and big brothers, even my mom pulls out her board sometimes. We have such fun playing together." He comes out of the jungle after spending most of the day there. He over hears everyone talking. My favorite thing to do back home is to go into the swamp and look for things. I found a piroq one time. Those are small flat bottom boats. My daddy let me keep it after no one claimed it for a long time.

I think I am going to try to catch some crawfish. He puts down the knife and grabs the net and goes to the water. He also grabs his spear in case he see's any of those yummy lobsters.

My favorite thing to do is go to Virginia Beach which is about 15 minutes from our house...I really like it when Daddy gets to take us on the aircraft carrier that he works on...I don't like it when he has to go out to sea though...Mommy cries and is always really sad...but there are lots of us to keep her company! I guess I just like to spend time with my sisters and brothers

When Moon came back into camp and saw some of the flowers Marissa had been using she says "THAT's plumeria! hibiscus is pretty but has no smell, now for smell and an ugly flower look for a green bloom that smells real good. it's Ylang Ylang. Any of the ginger flowers smell good, but I think the red ones are prettiest. We could try adding the blooms to Pierre's coconut oil and have perfume!"

Pierre came back to camp very quietly, so not to wake any one. Is any one awake? I have some crawfish to eat. He then started to boil some water, to cook his meal. If no one else is awake I will fix just enough for my self and return the rest to the water. But I will eat first before taking the rest back in case someone wakes up.

I live around water we have water in our front yard, it is a river called the Amite. Behind my house is a swamp Where you can see pretty birds and flowers all over the place. when you skip rocks in the swamp sometimes the Aligaters will grab them. I think they think they are fish jumping. I love skipping rocks you all shopuld see how many times you can make the rocks skip. The best I did tonight is 3 my record is 5.

Trey staggers back into camp with two of the water bottles filled and a big smile on his face. "Bingo, I found a lime tree!!! We can use it to sprinkle on our fish tonight. We can even put a little in our water to give it a fresher flavor. There were only 2 limes that were ripe but thats OK, it will give us a guarter wedge each. At least we know where it is now. I thought about putting it in water for Limeade but I don't think we should waste our precious sugar. Lets save it for our special Sunday COOKIES!!!"

I remember where it was it is up here near this bog. So Pierre is hurrying to get to it. Hisw granpa was in the Pacific theater during WWII and he said that they had this thing called poi and it waws made with this plant called taro. I wonder why grandpa was in the theater when every one else was fighting a war? that never made sence to me. OH here they are.

After looking at them he discovers that the roots are firm and harry like a coconut. so he digs up several of them and heads back to camp. wondering what play his grandpa was in. I wonder if it was hair or grease?

Makes it back to the camp. he takes the leaves off of the taro and takes the roots and the knife to the stream. He peals the roots uder the running water. Then once they are cleaned and have no no hair or dangling roots left on them he goes back to camp. He has got some peeled potatoes.

Trey wakes to find he has slept almost all day. He knew he was tired but didn't realize he was THAT tired. He mumbles to himself, "Oh my gosh, this is Saturday, I had such good intentions of getting everything ready for Sunday, I feel so bad not helping out. Theres Aggie & Meggie cooking, wonder what they are making?" Trey walks over to the campfire. "Hi Aggie & Meggie, I'm sorry I slept so late. Wow, you already have most of the Sunday cookies made. They look good. DO you need a place to store them till tomorrow? What can I do to help? Should I go out on fruit hunt?"

Trey wakes up to the beautiful music of the choirs singing at their churches. He takes advantage of the quiet within the camp and says some prayers for his friends & family at home, his new friends on the team and for the other team who has had to send a couple of their new friends home.
