Lola realizes the packs have been divvied up and when they stop for a short rest she looks in her pack and sees the sunscreen but not the knife. someone else must have that in their pack.

Brooke, Mandy, and Lyda Ruth are having a lightly tugher time keeping up with the older kids. There are 2 large bottles of water that get passed around on the 1st rest. CJ seems pretty adept with the compass and the map so far. You've walked what you guess to be one fourth of the way.

Dragging anything in this jungle heat seems impossible as the sweat trickles down your back. You are hot, and really thirsty too...but know that those 2, make that 1 1/2 big bottles of water need to last you til you can get to camp or find more. The younger kids are tired, hot, and thirsty, and almost feel like crying. You see a few land crabs on your way to camp, not many, they are mostly nocturnal one of you remembers reading, and you definitely see a few hermit crabs. What is a little freaky are the scurrying sounds and the sight of huge lizards, 2 or 3 in fact that slip off in the brush as you approach. They like to sun during the day, and lay around in various places. A monitor lizard is black and has yellow splotches, and range in size from 6 inches long to a couple of feet. If they try to pick one up, you will probably get bit, assuming you could catch it...but for now at least you are too tired to even try. You may see some birds in the banana trees, sap suckers, working over the flowers. which are big and sort of purple on a stalk on the banana tree...And there are vines hanging around off of the trees...a few trees have the strangest roots, huge and curvy, rippled like ribbons of bark and wood in a tangled mess. You also see some very TALL palm trees, and some of the shorter ones that have green coconuts on them. You hope there will be some of these by your camp as that survival book mentioned have coconut milk in them that is sweet and thirst quenching.

You are just about halfway to your camp now. At least there seem to be a few springs that appear to be freshwater.

There don't seem to be many fish at this spot, it is a freshwater running stream, not a very wide one. You might have better luck at the camp.

Mastermind Colleen says: The hike is long, but FINALLY! you find it, a semi-cleared out area, some sandy beach that leads onto harder green grassy soil. Everyone just falls down tired and dumps their packs. The water gets passes around and someones finishes off the last of the 1st big waterbottle. Only one left to share. You'd better do something about water today. At least you found a freshwater stream about 20 minutes walk away.

The sky looks clear, but the air smells wet so you can't tell if there will be more rain or not. The view is incredible! bright blue ocean as far as the eye can see. The water at the shore's edge is clear and bright and you see shells, definitely fish! though they move away as you go splashing in. There are fronds of seaweed waving in the water, and you recall the warning about fire coral and jellyfish, what to watch out for and to stay away from them.

Yes the camps are identical. hahaha it's what you do with it from this point on! There are trees and branches that need clearing, a camp to be set up, an inventory to be made. Stomachs are grumbling so you might want to unpack soon and see what's in there to eat.

Wanda drops her pack and just plops down on the sandy beach. She uses the backpack under her head and says she is going to rest just for a few minutes but soon finds herself napping.

Mandy is carrying the empty plastic water bottle in her hand and she has the round canteen strapped around her neck.

She starts to sing "Where oh where is the water spring? Oh where oh where can it be? ..." She smiles as the sun shines down through the tree branches. She stops to smell a pretty yellow flower. Hmmmmm Life is good. She pauses at the edge of the plant growth. "CJ, are you coming or not?"

while brushhing off the ants, Mandy noticed it wasn't as much the ants that bit her so much as a tiny coconut crab that had wandered too close to camp. It scurried away too fast to catch... this time anyway.

Wanda is woken up by the noise of people bustling around.

After checking what was divided among the packs and what was in the box, you have 1 bottle of multivitamins:500 tablets, 1 bottle ibuprofen: 100 tablets, 1 bottle sunscreen PF 16, not a big bottle, so use sparingly, 1 pound bag of rice in a cloth bag, 4 small wooden barrels of instant oatmeal, plain, unsweetened, each barrel looks to hold about 25 cups of instant oatmeal, 1 bar plain white soap, 1 small brown bottle of betadine for scrapes and cuts, 1 emergency flare, 2 large plastic water bottles (only 1 full one left) 2 liters each, 1 round canteen (holds 2 quarts), 1 large blue water tank (holds 2 gallons), 1 large green tarp semi-waterproof, 1 large rope net, 1 large cooking pot, 1 compass, 1 small shovel, 1 knife, 1 map with locations marked for campsite, tribal council, and challenge beach, 1 large wooden crate with separate lid:

1 list of Island rules: "Due to religious laws on Sunday there is to be no outdoor fires, no harvesting of marine life or collecting of seashells. On Sundays only, no sleeveless shirts or shorts, mini-skirts or bikinis may be worn. No fishing or hunting is allowed on Sunday." "No damage to the coral reefs will be tolerated. Do not stand on them or break off pieces. "

She looks at them setting up the tarp. "It might work better if you use branches underneath it, you know, build a lean-to, but hey, it's your show..."

Mandy finally arrives at the fresh water spring. She dips the canteen into the cool water first. Next, she leasurely dangles her legs into the water. Oh, it feels good on her ant bites. As she sits there, relaxing, she starts to wonder about that coconut crab that was also near her legs. "I wonder if they are safe to eat? I'll have to look it up in the survival book when I get back to camp."

She gets up and begins to dip the water bottle into the water...

She returns with the water from the spring. "Hey, do you think we should boil this water or something? I'm not sure we should drink it out of the spring. We could then store it in that large blue water tank."

Mandy then walks over to Cobra to see what he is doing.

Mandy doesn't wait for Lyda Ruth to answer her questions. Instead, she quickly dumps the spring water into the large cooking pot and skips away.

Mandy then walks over to the area under the tarp and grabs her back pack. "Hmmmm, I wonder what I have in here..." She discovers that there are some tribal clothing items that she hadn't noticed before. She looks over the shorts and tank top and considers changing into them. They look so much more comfortable in the warm heat of the day than the outfit she has on. She considers it, but then decides to save them for another day. She does, however, take the long tie and wrap it around her hair. She takes her luxury item, a soccer ball, out of the pack and kicks it around the clearing for a few minutes. She suddenly realizes that she is being watched and puts the soccer ball back into her pack and starts to gather kindling for the fire. "Doesn't anyone want to have fun around here?", she thinks to herself.

As she gathers kindling, she sees that CJ is also gathering firewood for the fire. "Hey CJ, can I help you look for firewood?" She skips over to his side by the edge of the woodsy area. "CJ? Do you like to play soccer?"

Mandy works at trying to keep the fire going with Lyda Ruth. Feverishly, she tries to keep the sparks from extinguishing as the wind begins to pick up. A drop of rain hits her on the nose. "Oh, no!", she thinks.

sorry to be a party pooper guys, but you need to check with me before "finding" food. the cocnuts actually do't just fall, and only the unripe cocnuts have milk in them, so I'll let you keep the one Mandy thunked, but there is no milk in it, but plenty of cocunut meat, 1/2" thick all around the inner rind.

if you go out looking for food, or coconuts or fruit, or try to fish, please email me and I will tell you what you find. Otherwise if the food just fell to your feet it would be too easy, ya know? thanks!!!!

Wanda hears Lola and gives her a look. "Hey I looked for 2 hours to find these things. I didn't think it was a big deal. You have a problem with that there is plenty more forest to shop in. I brought them back for everyone else too at least."

Wanda shrugs then goes off to the side under some trees. She takes her backpack and props it under her head.

Wanda is not sure what Lola grabbed, she had eaten 1/2 half then handed 2 and 1/2 tangerines to whoever was cooking. When Lola waves the knife Wanda laughs. "I'm from the South side of Chicago girl. Don't start something you can't finish. This is one short little beach here. don't start nothin' there won't be nothin."

"I got no problem being fetchgirl of the forest, but just so you know, I could have eaten all 3 of them and not brought any to share. I don't play that way, but I'm not no charity neither."

"Mmmmmmm, thanks for the coconut, Lola" Mandy then runs back to the cooking pot and fills another leaf with oatmeal for herself. She seats herself down next to Lola and happily eats her warm meal. She looks over at the tarp, strung among the tree branches. It looked sturdy under the trees. Hopefully, when rain really comes, it will hold up! The fire and cooking pot are just a little ways out from the tree area. The fire is close enough to hopefully keep them all warm at night while under the tarp, but far enough away that they won't risk a fire hazard with clothing, etc.

Wanda take the coconut, "Thanks." I'm up early so I can take a morning watch. I think we can count on it going out at some point tho, so we should keep some kindling under the tarp. We don't really need it for heat, but the fire light will keep those lizards things away."

Lola rolls her eyes that Mandy would give up so easily. She gets to her feet and goes over to the fire to help Lyda Ruth. "I think we need to tend the fire in pairs so we can keep it going all night. Why don't we take the first shift? Mandy's already asleep and I don't know what happened to the boys."

"Morning, everyone! Boy, it sure gets hot out here early, doesn't it?" She stretches and gets up to walk into the woods to "take care of business" and to change clothes. She totes her backpack with her to decide just what to wear. "Hmmm, I think I'll wear my new tank top and new shorts today. I like these new clothes!"

She then sits down and puts on her blue sandles. They are a little big and floppy, but they are cool and comfortable. She returns to camp and volunteers to man the fire while others take their turn sleeping. She gathers some more kindling from around the edge of the woods and piles it neatly near the campfire. "I'll have to go and get more water later. Our water tank is getting low again." she thinks. Mandy then puts a pot of water on to boil for the morning breakfast of oatmeal. She digs out the multivitamins to make sure that each person takes one this morning. We can't be getting sick now! The water starts to boil and she calls everyone to breakfast. "Hey everyone, the water is boiling. If you'd like some oatmeal, come on over and I'll make you some." Slowly, she hears some of the other children begin to awaken.

"You know, I've been thinking...we don't have any fish hooks. How are we going to try to catch some fish? Should we put the wooden crate into the water and see if we can scoop some out? Does anyone have any better ideas? CJ? Cobra? Girls?"

Mandy continues to stir the oatmeal and to dish it out to hungry tribe members. "I want to see if I can find any coconuts today. We need the shells for bowls. This eating off of leaves is kind of messy!" Mandy states with a smile. He he he hick!

stretches and yawns..."Oh, I slept through dinner and all through the night! Why didn't someone wake me?" "I must have been more tired than I thought!" She gets up and looks at the beautiful sunrise and the sparkling water... "Maybe I'll try some fishing this morning. Who's that waking up over there?"

Takes a drink of water and goes to the bathroom behind a tree. Now I'm ready for the day!"

Mandy sits down to eat her own oatmeal before it gets cold. She then takes the wooden crate down to the water's edge and sinks it down just under the top of the water. She places a few rocks in the bottom of the crate to prevent it from floating off somewhere. "I wonder if I'll catch any fish inside this crate today?"

She then grabs the two plastic water jugs and the canteen and scurries off to the spring for more fresh water. She sees several lizards and a snake sunning themselves along the path. At one point, she is so frightened that she considers turning back. However, the team is counting on her and she knows that she has to bring water back to boil. The hot sun is really beating down on her and she begins to wonder why she didn't put some sunscreen on or choose a better top to wear today. The tank top may have been a bit too little to wear in this bright sun! She reaches the spring and fills the cannisters with the cool water. She decides to wade into the water to cool off. Oh, does that feel good. "I'm not a good swimmer, but I can wade in this shallow part," she thinks to herself. After cooling off, she walks back to camp and sets the containers down near the fire. There is still some oatmeal in the pot, so until it is eaten, they cannot boil the new water. Some of the team members are still sleeping. She wonders just what challenges they have ahead of them. She runs over to check her wooden crate in the water. Still no fish...will it work?

As Mandy and Lyda Ruth are disappointedly walking back to camp after finding no more coconuts, Lyda Ruth spots a small bunch of green bananas haning down "Hey look at those, should we pick them or leave them till they ripen?" the girls discuss it and decide it would be better to let them ripen as they may get tummyaches from the unripened fruit. Mandy asks Lyda Ruth what she thinks of CJ as she feels he is a bit scary but he did help her with the ants. Lyda Ruth says never to judge a book by it's cover and let's see what happens with him!" They head back into camp and go and check on the fire and how the fishing is going.

She grabbed the 5 to bring back to camp. They will surely ripen enough to use by tomorrow! As Mandy walks back, she wonders who ate the one banana. It could have been an animal. It also could have been one of the team members helping themselves to a secret snack! Hmmmm, she thought.

Upon entering the camp, she calls out to Lyda Ruth. "Lyda Ruth, I went back to get those bananas and there were only 5 left! Do you suppose an animal ate one?" (Secretly, she was praying that no one thinks that she ate it!)

She's angry that Mandy lost the crate, but she knows yelling at Mandy won't win her any Brownie points with the rest of the tribe when it comes time to vote someone off so she decides to use some tact. Lola sits down beside Mandy and pats her arm comfortingly. "It's okay. It was a good idea, but it didn't work. The important thing is that we work together to defeat the other tribe. We'll find another way to catch fish." But Lola is really thinking that if Mandy does something careless like this again, when it comes time to vote off a teammate, Lola will vote her off.

Mandy looks around the forest for possible foods. She spies a couple of crabs. "Lyda Ruth! Look!" She runs after the crabs and tries to grab them. Will they be dinner tonight?

You wake to another overcast day, showers off and on though less than yesterday. What has gone up is the heat index (the quivalent of the wind chill factor) so even tho it is only 86 degrees, the heat index makes your body feel it is 96 degrees...Anything over 90 and you should be careful.

This is not the day to overexert yourself. Remember to stay in the shade and to drink lots of fluids... sunstroke is a serious possibility on the island.

after the showers finally end mid afternoon, the skt is still overcast but it is much colled off. the temperature is only 80 and the heat index is down to 77. Everyone feels much relieved and not so sluggish.

After the rain the beach is fairly crawling with crabs! I'd say each person could catch two or three if they act fast before they all run away.

Cobra

is out on the beach, chasing crabs, and trying to catch some. In between dashes, he has been picking his nose a bit and flicking boogers into the air.

I don't know what, if anything he catches, but the poor guy is still plagued by a ton of really smelly gas...poor kid!

"Quick everybody, over here!" Mandy shouts and jumps around excitedly. "Look at all the crabs on the beach!" Let's try to catch them for dinner." "We could have a feast if we can catch them!" Mandy quickly empties her back pack onto the ground and grabs the shovel. She runs to the beach and tries to scoop up crabs and dump them into her backpack. She figures they can worry about killing them later. She has some difficulty. The crabs are fast and they scoot off the shovel almost as fast as she scoops them onto it. Also, some of the ones that she successfully puts into the backpack are crawling out while she is busy gathering more. At this rate, she'll be lucky to have any still in there for dinner! "Please everybody, come help catch these guys!"

"Hey guys I know the easiest way to catch the crabs!!!! We went to Cape Hatteras a few years ago and my Dad was being silly so he would watch the crabs as they came out of their holes and wandered off, then he would go and put a bucket in front of their hole so they couldn't get in, then he would chase them and they would run straight back to their holes and plop right into the bucket let's try that and we can eat like kings and queens for dinner tonight!!!" (this happens to be a true story)

"Lyda Ruth, what a super idea! I'm sure that the water that Wanda was boiling is clean. Let me pour it into the storage tank and we can use the cooking pot!"

Mandy quickly runs over to the water and pours it into the storage tank. She comes running back with the pot. "Does anyone know where these crabs came from so that we can cover their hole?" she asks.

They are coming from all over. When the rain stopped they came out to try and find food. Using the shovel and the pot and Cobra you catch about a dozen more, securing them in the backpacks. Cobra does get his thumb pinched once, but not badly, just enough to make him drop one crab. Do you keep trying?

Mandy sets the pot on the ground and runs back to check on her backpack full of crabs. Some are still trying to escape. She carefully picks up the backpack and shakes them back down into the pack. She then flips the top over and latches the pack. "There, hopefully some of you won't escape!" "Gee, I wonder how many are still in my pack?" She then carries the closed pack back to where the others are trying to trap crabs into the pot. She joins in chasing the little rascals into the pot.

Oh we definitely keep trying to catch those crabs. After all, how often are we going to be able to find food right on the beach! Besides, we could always try to contain some of them and eat them another day!

Colbra caught 3, there are 11 in the pack (1 escaped) and 3 more in the pot trap. Each one is a little bigger than an adult's fist. The pot holds 2 at a time with water in it.

It will make your tummy feel better. Mandy, don't worry about tribal council. I'm sure you're safe. Lola, do you like crab? How about you Wanda? "Well, I guess we'd better pack up and get ready to walk to tribal council." "Do we have the torches ready?" Mandy carefully cleans up the "kitchen" area and then goes to finish packing her bag. She gingerly sets the soccer ball under the tarp for anyone to use, regardless of tonight's outcome. Looking apprehensive, she puts her pack onto her back and walks to the edge of camp and quietly stands and waits for the others to finish gathering their belongings. She looks at all the other children's faces and wonders who will be forever gone after tonight.

The island is muggy and wet as you trek through the dark with a small torch from your fire. You hear slithering sounds and several 3 foot long lizards run out of your path. The nights sounds are almost terrifying, and in fact one of you sees a bat, the only mammal truly native to Kosrae... All are silent as you cross the small footbridge and sit in a semicircle around a huge fire. Gia tells each person to take a torch as they walk into the clearing.

She looks at each of one of you...then zooms in on Mandy, asking "Mandy, You've barely had a chance to get to know your tribemates. Do you think tonight's votes will be about personalities? or about contributions to the team?"

Mandy clears her throat then replies "I think it will be a little of both. We are starting to form friendships and actions are very important to how we group together. However, if someone is really good at gathering food or taking charge, that might swing the votes in their favor."

Gia Nods... then looks to Roxie, "Roxie, I understand your tribe had a feast of quite a few crabs tonight. The other Tribe's name is Nicarong...the Kosraen word for the coconut crab. Do you think you will have a better chance at the next challenge after tonight?"

Roxie is confident as she replies, "I think our team has an excellent chance of winning the next challenge. We are settling in now and have tasted defeat, so it's time for a victory! I believe our team members will pull together for the good of the tribe." Finally she looks to Lola,

"Lola, it's been pretty tough fishing without that gear. Nicarong Tribe is eating like kings right now. Do you think you'd be sitting here in Tribal Council if your team had won the reward challenge?"

Lola answers quickly and decisively, "Nope, we wouldn't be sitting here eating these unseasoned crabs if we'd won the reward challenge. I'm for kicking off the deadbeats who didn't even try."

A few people gulp. gia nods and then says "Okay it's time to vote!!! Each player in turn goes and writes a name on a scrap of paper and puts it in a drum. When the last vote is cast, Gia puts the drum in front of her...

She reads the first vote "Brooke" the second vote "Cobra" a small fart fills the silence and someone groans... the third vote "Wanda" "That's 1 vote Wanda, 1 vote Brooke and 1 vote Cobra."

the fourth vote reads "Brooke" the fifth vote reads "Cobra" the sixth vote reads "Wanda" the seventh vote reads "Brooke" Gia pauses until you are ready to scream.... "Thats 2 votes Cobra, 2 votes for Wanda and 3 votes for Brooke. We could have a tie."

The last vote reads "Brooke" Gia says, "Brooke, the Tribe has spoken, bring me your torch." Brooke stoically walks over and Gia douses her flame with a rounded gourd. Without a backward glance, Brooke leaves the Tribal Council. You walk back to camp in well-lit silence.

Wakes up first and stretches and yawns...It's the start of another day! I wonder what the weather will be like. It's hot already. I think I'll go for a swim before breakfast. Oh, I see Lyda and Ruth are moving around. I forgot to invite Lyda to share my pillow last night but I see she found a corner to lay her head on. My pillow is big and comfy. I'm so glad my brother talked me into bringing it. Good morning Lyda Ruth, I see everyone is stirring now. Must have heard me thinking. Hehehe..."

Good morning my little gerbils!!! (just kidding :) You have all done extremely well this week, as a reward (and so I can catch up on promised photos) assume you are mildly successful at any food hunting ventures today. Don't go overboard, but assume there is no problem finding what you are looking for in terms of food. the bananas are green and so is any person who eats seafood leftovers from yesterday. Remember only ripe coconuts fall on their own and they have no milk.

Warning! Today's weather warns of another scorcher heat index... the water feels cooler but don't stay out too long. Wind from the E (100 degrees) at 9 MPH, Visibility 10 mile(s), Sky conditions overcast, Showers in the vicinity, Towering cumulus clouds observed, Temperature 87 F, Heat index 98 F!!!!

"Whew, It's getting really hot out here, but the swim felt good. Do we have some sunscreen? I feel a little burn on my back. I think I'll head for a little shade, then go look for bananas. Anyone want to help me?"

Walks toward the camp and seeks out shade. The hammock is empty so she lies down for a few minutes.

"Ok Wanda, grumpy head, you're on, I did pretty good catching the crabs yesterday I bet I can catch a few fishies also, I'll go with you! Why don't you boys go and see about getting some more kindling for the fire, Lola maybe you can keep the fire going till me and wanda come back with fish??"

Lyda and Wanda head off into the water and before too long come back with 4 medium size fish, not much but if eaten along with oatmeal with make a decent breakfast.

Mandy was quieter than usual for most of the day as she thought about how Brooke must be feeling. She did go swimming with the others in the morning to cool off, but she wasn't her usual jovial self. Finally, by early evening, she is starting to feel much better.

Mandy grabs the water bottles and walks to the stream to get more water. On her way back, she stops to smell some yellow flowers and she sees some tangerines growing. They seem ripe to her. She is wearing the Ocono tribe long tie in her hair, so she unties it and places it onto the ground. She picks the ripest tangerines and places them carefully in the middle of the tie. She is able to pick 7 that look edible. "Good, she thinks. That will be enough for all of us to each have one!" She ties the wrap carefully and struggles back down the path with the two water bottles and the wrap full of tangerines.

Mandy returns to camp with the tangerines. "Hey, everyone! I brought water to boil and guess what I found?" "She unties the tangerines and shows them all her find. "We need to carefully think about what we are going to do tomorrow. Don't forget the rules of the island! We are not allowed to have a fire, harvest marine life, or collect seashells." "We are also not allowed to wear sleeveless shirts, shorts, miniskirts, or bikinis tomorrow. We can't hunt or fish either." She pauses and looks at all the other children. "In other words, we'd better boil extra water today and find whatever food we can for tomorrow now!" "I think these tangerines should be saved for tomorrow because they won't spoil if we keep them in a shady spot." "Did anyone else find anything on the island that could be saved for tomorrow?" "I think we'll just have to rest and relax tomorrow."

"Hey, you all! I found some bananas for us all! There's 9 bananas. We'll have to divide them evenly tomorrow. They are a little green, but if we put them in a bag, they should ripen some by tomorrow. How did you guys do? I wanted to help with water today, but looks like Lyda Ruth and Mandy beat me to it! Wanda....did you have any luck fishing? How about you CJ and Cobra? Did you find anything edible? I say we build a big campfire and sit around it tonight. The smoke will keep the bugs away. I am covered in bug bites! I shouldn't go walking in my sandals I guess. My feet took a beating in the undergrowth today. I think I will go and soak them in the ocean for a while. Anyone like to join me?"

Mandy ran over to her back pack and grabbed shorts and a top to swim in. (No swim suit to my knowledge.) "Just let me change into these and I'll be ready!"

As the girls splash around in the water, Mandy brings up what has been troubling her all day. "What do you suppose Brooke is doing right now?" "I can't stop worrying about how she must feel about being voted off of the island." "Do you suppose she is on an airplane right now, or do you think she is home?" "I had heard a rumor that those voted off go on television for interviews." "Do you think that is true?" Mandy quizzed the others.

As the children discussed Brooke, they continued to splash and play in the cooling ocean waters. Suddenly, Mandy yelled, "Watch out Lyda Ruth! There is a jellyfish not too far behind you!"

Swims away from where the jelly fish is spotted and comes closer to the other kids. she gives cobra a dirty look and shakes her head disgustedly, bodily noises always irritate her when done in front of others, she thinks it is rude, she is a bit prissy in some ways. she goes over to the other girls and starts splashing them and they all start enjoying the late afternoon sunshine.

"It's just a good thing that it is warm this time of year here or we'd freeze with no fire tomorrow!" Mandy wades out of the water and starts to wring out her long greenish/silvery colored hair. "I'll go stoke up the fire with some more kindling."
