Mandy Estelleita

Mandy awakens to a bright new day. She looks at her tally and it is the 42nd day on the island! It is also Memorial Day at home. Mandy thinks about what her family might be doing today...she thinks they would be barbequing hotdogs and hamburgers later. "Mmmmmmm, that sure sounds good," she thinks. Mandy gets up and takes care of business. She sits down by the fire pit and tries to start a fire...

11:40
May 28, 2001

From Colleen

Welcome to a new week on Kosrae! the pages were archived and reset (sorry I slept late) and I added a link to the luau.

Today is NO day for a barbecue, it's only 86 degrees but the heat index makes it feel 98. It is HOT out there, in spite of the 15 mph wind from the west and the showers of rain that have been on and off all morning. It's all you can do to keep your fire going today.

12:34
May 28, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy tries and tries to light the fire. She rubs the sticks together and just when the fire starts, the wind blows it back out. She moves around to another angle and tries again. After about an hour of trying, she sits down in the sand in defeat. "This wind just won't let me start the fire!" "What are we going to do? We are going to run out of water!" cries Mandy.

13:56
May 28, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy gets up off the ground and walks over to where the other girls are eating breakfast. "Maybe one of you can try your hand at lighting the fire. I am going to go and take a bath and wash my hair. Maybe I'll feel better after that." says Mandy as she grabs clean clothes, the shampoo and starts to walk to the stream...

13:59
May 28, 2001

Lola studies the situation. "Maybe it would be better if we worked as a team. One of us can try to light it while the others huddle around and try to block the wind. Let's see if that will work." Lola, Lyda, and Roxie try to light the fire while Mandy is bathing.

16:46
May 28, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy returns from her bath feeling much better.

"Here, let me help block the wind too." "I'm sorry I was so grumpy earlier. I just got mad at that wind!"

17:15
May 28, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

After much effort, the girls are able to make a spark and ignite some kindling that they had kept protected under the shelter. Soon, they once again had a roaring fire, despite the wind and rain. The girls had long ago made a little shelter over the fire pit that would keep some of the rain off the fire. It didn't work real well when it was super windy with rain, but for drizzle type rain, it worked well.

All four girls took the water bottles to the stream and filled them up for boiling. They had a great time talking, lauging, giggling, and looking for food along the way. They managed to pick 4 more oranges and Mandy even found 2 limes! "When we get back, let's check the fish trap! Maybe we will have a good dinner!"

19:47
May 28, 2001

"Yipee!" Lola says, "We caught two fish. They aren't very big, but they will certainly help with dinner. And we've nearly forgotten about the Yodels I won during the challenge the other night. They will make a great dessert."

19:53
May 28, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

"Wow, that's great, Lola!" "I'll go and catch them and clean them for dinner. Your Yodels sound so yummy!" says Mandy excitedly.

Mandy skips away toward the trap and starts catching and then cleaning the fish. She buries the remains before returning to camp with the meat. She waits patiently for the water to boil so that she can then use the pan for the fish...

20:26
May 28, 2001

Lola, Lyda, and Roxie clean up the camp while Mandy is cooking. The thought of fish and Yodels make them work faster.

20:38
May 28, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

"Wow, the camp sure looks great! You all must be hungry!" laughs Mandy. After the water is poured into the storage tank, she fries up the fish for their dinner. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm what a great meal!

20:40
May 28, 2001

Roxie

"What a good dinner we're having tonight. It's not like a barbeque back home but it will do. The yodels are a special treat! We've got to get mentally ready for the next immunity challenge! We MUST win the next 2 immunity challenges before we merge as one tribe. It's only fair to have 4 of them and 4 of us. That would work out well! Mandy you sure are a good cook. Lola, you look exceptionally good tonight and Lyda, you are such a good friend! I don't know what I'd do without you all!"

Gives each tribe member a hug and a smile...

21:25
May 28, 2001

Lola returns Roxie's hug. "Thanks. I don't know what I would do hear without you all as friends. Remember how lonely it was when we first got here and didn't know each other?"

22:43
May 28, 2001

The girls agree that it's much better to work together. They decide to head for bed early so they will get some work done tomorrow and rest up for the week's challenges. They clean up the camp and head for bed.

23:57
May 28, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy is exhausted tonight as they have been really busy all day today. All four girls had to work so hard to get the fire started, but once they did, they had a great time doing all of the chores together. They are all such a good team now. It was so nice of Lola to share the yodels with everyone and boy did they taste good!

"I'm going to go and wash up and then get some sleep. Good night, everyone! Pleasant dreams!" Mandy runs down to the beach with her toothbrush and something to wash her face with. Soon, she comes skipping back from the beach. "Hey, everyone, there are dolphins jumping in the water again!" "I think I'm going to dream about them tonight! Goodnight!" she says with a smile. Soon, Mandy is asleep. Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

00:09
May 29, 2001

Roxie

Yawns...Ahh what a pretty day! I slept well. Today is my birthday and I didn't tell anyone. Hehehe... I wonder if I should tell the girls? We could play games and sing songs and have a celebration. "Hey Mandy! Guess what? It's my birthday! Do you think we can celebrate? I'd like to have a banana and an orange for my lunch. That sounds really good. I think I'll go watch the dolphins with the binoculars after I walk and take my bath. Lola, Lyda Ruth, it's my birthday!"

Smiles and skips towards the toothbrushes and toothpaste...

09:04
May 29, 2001

Lola wakes up to Roxie's announcement. "Hey Roxie, happy birthday! I think we should do all the work today and you should act like a queen and just have fun. What do you think, girls?" Lola heads for the water to wash up and while she's there, she brings back some water to sterilize.

12:12
May 29, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

"Lola, I think that is a great idea! says Mandy as she groggily gets up out of bed. She looks around and sees that Roxie has gone so she motions for the others to gather around her. "Hey, why don't we do a lot of special things for her today like finding leaves for a new, fresh bed and trying to find a lot of fruit for her today?" says Mandy quite excited now.

Mandy grabs her clothes and quickly runs to the stream for a quick bath. She dresses and starts searching for bananas, oranges, limes, and anything else she can find to make Roxie's day a nice one. "Hmmmmm, she must be six today," she thinks as she works...

12:31
May 29, 2001

From Colleen

It's 86 degrees with no rain today! that's the good news, but wind and a heat index of 96 makes for a hot muggy day! The 15 mph wind keeps changing directions so the fire is hard to keep going.

14:00
May 29, 2001

Lyda Ruth

Happy birthday Roxie, yes let's have fun today and celebrate, gosh I bet your family misses you tho! Tomorrow is another challenge day, so let's just have fun and not think about it today!!!

14:52
May 29, 2001

Lola sizes up the fire situation. "Lyda, why don't you stay here and try to keep the fire going? It won't tax Roxie too much to block the wind." She giggles at her joke. "Mandy and I will go get some fresh leaves for her bed and try to find some fruit."

15:55
May 29, 2001

Mandy and Lola

Mandy and Lola run into the forest and gather soft leaves to make a fresh bed for Roxie. They find 6 oranges and a bunch of 4 bananas in a new spot they'd not looked before. They had dragged the beach blanket along with them and they piled all on top and dragged it back to camp. Along the way were some pretty flowers, so Mandy picked a bouquet for Roxie too. It was a fun day, but very hot! "Lola, I think we should go swimming after we get back to camp!"

The girls return to camp. Lyda Ruth and Roxie are still trying to block the wind from the campfire. Mandy and Lola make up Roxie's new bed and place the flowers in some water on the table. The wind tries to dump the flowers, so Mandy places the container down into the sandy dirt and secures it a bit. Next, the girls try to push a bunch of sand all around the fire pit to make a bit mound around it. They hope that if they can build a big wall around it, the wind will not blow it out. Mandy brings some more dry kindling and stokes up the flames as they work. Once the fire is a little more protected, the girls get ready and all run to the ocean for a swim...

18:23
May 29, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy and the others splashed around in the ocean for quite a while. Mandy finally got out when she started to look a bit "prunish". She got the beach blanket and umbrella and set it up on the beach. She placed her sun glasses on and slathered on some of the sunblock and then relaxed under the umbrella on the blanket. It sure is a nice day! She lazily watched the others swimming and even caught a glimpse of a dolphin jumping around out in the ocean. Soon, she was quietly napping...Zzzzzzzzzzzz

19:21
May 29, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Later, Mandy and the girls enjoyed a birthday celebration with fruits and oatmeal for Roxie. What a fun day! All too soon, it was time to go to sleep. They all brushed their teeth and washed up for bed. "Good night all!" said Mandy.

23:36
May 29, 2001

Lola settled down next to her friends. "Good night. HOpe you had a great birthday, Roxie." zzzzzzzzzzz

00:37
May 30, 2001

Mastermind Angie After everyone has settled down for the night, and is sleeping soundly, they are awakened by a rustling sound, and growls. There are about six or seven shadows moving through camp, tearing at dirty clothes and nosing over the oatmeal cannisters. As you wake up, you realize it is a pack of dogs, ranging in size from poodle sized to lab sized...they are all scarred and very thin looking dogs. When they see you move, they growl and act aggressive. One appears to be the leader of them, and he is poised to attack, hackles raised, a growl echoing in his throat. If you run, it is apparent the dogs will treat you as prey.

01:05
May 30, 2001

You hear the dogs knocking over and bashing around one of the oatmeal canisters and you groan when you see them dislodge the lid, spilling several days rations on the ground. They sniff at it and then nose around the pot and a few loose camp items before finally moving off into the night.

03:36
May 30, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy awakens and is thankful it is daylight. Those dogs were so scary! Mandy just hid under the blanket until they all left the camp. Mandy gets up and assesses the damage...some spilled oatmeal, but nothing else seems to be messed up. She uprights the oatmeal barrel and although the dogs wasted some of the oatmeal, there is still enough left for the girls to eat carefully. Since they are finding oranges lately, they haven't eaten much oatmeal. They did have some yesterday for Roxie's birthday, but hadn't had any for days before that.

Mandy dresses and takes the water bottles to the stream once more. While there, she bathes downstream and then returns to take the water on back to camp. She is just stoking up the fire when the others start to stir...

08:20
May 30, 2001

Lola gets up and greets Mandy. "You did a great job of cleaning up the camp. Those dogs sure were scary last night." She begins to wash. "Maybe we should start securing our supplies. It's a good thing we haven't been eating much oatmeal lately." She finishes washing. "I'm going to go for a swim and I'll check the fish trap. Then I think I'll go look for some more taro."

12:14
May 30, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

" "Good idea, Lola...I don't think the dogs will like Taro!" giggles Mandy. "Oh, don't forget to wear gloves!"

Mandy finishes boiling the water and pours it into the storage tank. "Anyone want to play a quick game of horseshoes before we search for more fruit?"

16:07
May 30, 2001

From Colleen, I am back and ready in case anyone has any questions! I just sent out the reward challenge email, and the actual clues and where you guys can post answers and discuss it are at the following website

http://members.aol.com/sssoconong/beach.htm

Good luck! I will tally scores at midnight central

16:21
May 30, 2001

The girls work together on the challenge, hoping they will beat the Nicarongs. They head for bed, not knowing how they scored. They hope they will wake up tomorrow and find they get a barbecue. "Good night!" they call to each other. Zzzzzzzzzzzzz

00:13
May 31, 2001

From Colleen: I saw some incredible teamwork today! BOTH tribes did wonderfully, 30 minutes after posting I started working on a tie-breaker thinking I underestimated your abilities! Everyone should be quite proud of your intuitive skills. One team got a perfect score, and the other team missed only 1 clue... Nicarong wins with 50 points, and Ocono had 49 points, missing only #44: 7 Cardinal Virtues and 7 Deadly Sins.

My hats off to both tribes! Keep those thinking caps handy tomorrow! you will need them....

01:20
May 31, 2001

From Colleen, the days starts withlight showers. It's cloudy and breezy with winds from the East/northeast. It's only 83 degrees today, with a reasonable humidity and low heat index, so it should be a lovely day! The Immunity challenge has been emailed, or check out your private beach challenge page for more details on the Great butterfly Hunt!

05:44
May 31, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy awakens and immediately begins work on figuring out the butterflies...she goes great...no problems...until...group H! "Hey, wake up you guys! I need help with group H!" says Mandy.

She glances at group I and sighs...it will be a tough one too. "Where did Gia find some of these last butterflies?" wonders Mandy to herself. She gets up and gets a glass of water. It is a good thing the girls got extra water to boil yesterday...there's no time to mess with it today!

10:21
May 31, 2001

From Colleen

less than a half hour til the tie-breaker, i am posting here so everyone hopefully gets notified.. Good luck!

19:40
May 31, 2001

From Colleen:

it took a pretty tough tie-breaker to make finish week's challenge. Out of the 15 answers submitted by Nicarong 2 were incorrect for a score of 13 points. Of the 9 answers submitted by Ocono, 4 were incorrect for 5 points. Nicarong wins immunity, I'll see Ocono tomorrow in tribal council.

20:32
May 31, 2001

Roxie

"Boy, I can't believe we lost"

"Please, vote me off...I am so homesick and I wanna go home!"

21:41
May 31, 2001

Lola sadly returns to camp with her tribemates. "We tried so hard and we lost again! I don't want to vote any of you guys off."

21:41
May 31, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy hugs Roxie. "Are you sure about this? We will miss you here."

21:41
May 31, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy and the others sadly brush teeth, go potty, get last minute drinks of water, and settle down under the blanket. Unmistakable sobs seem to be coming from all four girls...Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

21:45
May 31, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

The girls all awaken at pretty much the same time today. They look around at the camp and are very sad. Today, they must vote someone off the island.

"Roxie, since you want to go home today, why don't we all take a walk with you this morning?" Mandy asks. They all dress and walk down the path, hand in hand, enjoying the last moments as a great team...

10:32
Jun 1, 2001

From Colleen: As you go to prep food you realize that after the boonie dogs tribe is just enough oatmeal left for tight rations of about 5 days worth. You know that next week is the last week you need to play as a tribe, and that your food only has to last until 1 week from now, but your food supply is about as tight as it gets. fruit is back on a lot of the trees though, and the fish as always is plentiful, but your staples are running low. I believe you have only used rice once so you may have some of that left too.

When you start moving around camp you notice that making it's way slowly across your stretch of beahc is a huge beautiful tortoise. You remember that the guidebook said sometimes they snap, but this one seems to just be slowly passing through.

There were light showers VERY early in the morning but they seem to be over now. It's a lovely day, mildly breezy, with pretty clouds in the sky, and a cool 84 degrees but it feels more like 75.

11:41
Jun 1, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

As the girls return to camp, Mandy notices the huge tortoise out on the beach. "Look at that!" says Mandy as she points excitedly at the tortoise.

The girls all run to the beach to have a closer look. The tortoise stops and looks at them and they in turn hesitate to go much closer. After all, the guidebook mentions something about snapping turtles and the girls aren't too sure about this one!

12:24
Jun 1, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

"I wonder if we could sit on top of his shell?" Mandy giggles. The girls circle around him, but at a safe distance. The tortoise seems a bit agitated...

13:44
Jun 1, 2001

Lola looks over the tortoise. "Let's try getting on his back. That will be something to remember for our last day together. Who wants to give me a push? I'm not afraid to try it.

13:59
Jun 1, 2001

From Colleen, slight correction per the Kosrae expert :0 it was a sea turtle not a tortoise (never knew the difference much myself) so if any kids approach it, they notice it has flippers...

16:00
Jun 1, 2001

Lyda Ruth

"Yes, let's ride him, let's have fun today, tonight will be too sad. Hey Roxie, I will be joining you soon, and then we will all have our visit, and not have to worry about hard challenges and tribal council, we will play and laugh and have a wonderful time together, and also have good food to eat. I am taking Clyde home with me, I have an aquarium at home I can put him in, and you guys will get to spend more time with him when you come to my house, we will all be together again!!!"

16:02
Jun 1, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy looks closer at the turtle..."Uh, are we sure we want to get on the back of this creature?" "Look, it has flippers! I don't think it's a tortoise..."

Mandy stands back cautiously.

16:34
Jun 1, 2001

Lola climbs up on the sea turtle's back. "Oh come on, Mandy. Don't be scared. Maybe he will carry me out in the water and I can ride him like a boat."

19:31
Jun 1, 2001

Lola has fun showing off that she is the bravest in the tribe to sit on the turtle. Suddenly it begins to move. Her eyes get large. She realizes there is no way to hold on. She jumps down before she is thrown off, trying to laugh so her tribe mates won't see her fear. "Gee, that was fun! Does anyone else want to try?"

23:23
Jun 1, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

The girls return from tribal council very sad...Roxie is on her way back home. "Well, we sure are a sad bunch." says Mandy.

Mandy brushes her teeth and washes her face for bed. All three girls go to the shelter and slowly fall asleep as Lyda Ruth's Sandman pays a visit...Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

00:31
Jun 2, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy wakes up early once more. She dresses and takes the water bottles and the shampoo down to the stream. She walks to the bathing spot and takes a nice long, soothing bath and washes her hair. Once she is clean and refreshed, she goes back to fill the water bottles. They have to boil a lot of water today to prepare for tomorrow.

Back at camp, Mandy stokes up the flames and puts the first batch of water on the fire to boil. She then goes back to the stream for more water...

08:22
Jun 2, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

On Mandy's second trip, she spots some bananas growing in a tree. It looks like there is a good sized bunch ready to pick. She will have to come back for that after she takes this second batch of water back to camp.

"I'm not worried about not having much oatmeal. We've been mostly saving that for Sundays anyway." she thinks. "I'll try to catch some fish for tonight's supper and we can make some Taro banana cookies too. I'll ask the girls if they want to help me gather Taro when they wake up." Mandy whistles on her way back to camp. Then, she realizes she doesn't have anything to be so happy about. Her friend, Roxie, isn't here to play with...

08:25
Jun 2, 2001

Lyda Ruth

Wakes up in a grouchy and irritable mood, begins to help clean up around the camp and look for Taro. "Sorry guys, I am feeling awful today about Roxie and this whole island thing is getting to me, I am tired of the yucky food, and the hard ground to sleep on and the hard challenges and ALL of it, wish I was on that airplane home with Roxie, but well anyway, let's get on with it as here we still are for now"

14:17
Jun 2, 2001

Lola awakens feeling sad about Roxie's departure. She had a bad dream last night that the sea turtle carried Roxie off, but when she woke up, she remembered tribal council and the sad looks on her tribemates' faces as they waved goodbye to Roxie.

Lola takes a deep breath, determined to snap out of her bad mood. She goes down to the beach to wash up, then heads into the forest to look for some taro. While she's exploring, she finds a lime and brings it back to camp with the taro.

15:45
Jun 2, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

Mandy boils the taro that Lola brought back and then mashes both the cooked taro and the bananas that she brought together. Next, she fried little patties of the mixture to make cookies. Some they will eat tonight. Some they will save for tomorrow. After she finishes making the cookies, she checks her fish trap and discovers 3 little fish swimming in the trap. She catches them, skins them, buries the remains, and brings the meat back to camp. She fries the fish up for dinner. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm, they tasted so good. The girls enjoyed Lola's lime squeezed over the fish.

"Hey, Lola? Do you and Lyda Ruth want to play a game after dinner?" Mandy asks as she munches on her fish.

18:14
Jun 2, 2001

Lola nods, munching on a banana taro cookie. "That would be fun. Do you want to play horseshoes or Monopoly? Or maybe charades? That would be fun!"

18:26
Jun 2, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

"We've not played charades! That might be fun!" says Mandy.

21:55
Jun 2, 2001

Mandy Estelleita

The girls finish dinner and clean up. They spend quite a bit of time playing charades and Monopoly. Finally, the sun starts to set and they decide they'd better wash up for bed and douse the flames of the campfire.

"Good night, Lyda Ruth....Good night, Lola," says Mandy. She is soon sleeping...Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

22:29
Jun 2, 2001

"Good night," Lola echoes. ZZZZZZZZZZ.

22:33
Jun 2, 2001

Lyda Ruth

Snuggles down with Mandy and Lola on either side of her, with their heads on Roxie's pillow. Roxie left it there for her friends to share, nice girl that she is. Lyda is still sad and misses her terribly but knows it won't be much longer and they will all be together again. she says her prayers and pulls her blankie up to her chin, tomorrow is sunday again, wow, and they will have time to play and have fun again. ZZZzzzzzzz

01:47
