The Bucharest Bugle: Issue 34-36A

Brashov is one of the "Seven Cities" that the King of Hungary asked diligent Saxon Germans to establish to secure the frontier of his empire in Transylvania. That was in the 12th century and the seven cities flourished.

Brashov is located in the hills at the base of the Transylvanian Alps. The picture above shows the Merchants building (constructed in the 15th century) on the edge of the public square and Mt. Timpa in the background (connected by a cable car).

The view from Mt. Timpa (900 meters). On the left is the famous Black Church (under restoration while I was there) and to the right of the hanging cable is the old Town Hall (now a history museum). The preference for terra cotta roofs is clear and provides a pleasant visual effect.

The image at the left is the old town hall which was converted to a museum about 90 years ago. The building dates from the 16th century.

Most of the old city dates from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. They style is Baroque and the feel is distinctly German.
