The Ashgabat Gazette

Special Carpet Issue

Above is a picture of the corner of a Beshir carpet. This is from the region of Turkmenistan near the Amu Darya River.

On this rug everything means something: the red patterns on the left are leaves, the large red blobs on the right are jelly fish, the small red items are fish, etc.

One of the drawback to to carpet shopping in Ashgabat (or anywhere else) is that, if you like this design, there are few examples and you may not be able to get your size.

Above is a gapylyk, a U-shaped rug for decorating the yurt entrance from the inside.
To the right is an asmalyk which was used to decorate the front of a camel for a wedding.
