Fire escapes were always regarded as unsightly so they were consigned to alleys and disregarded as architectural elements. There, alone and in disgrace, they sometimes attain an abstract beauty in the play of light, shadow and geometry.
Black, linear, visually superimposed on themselves when seen from below, fire escapes are an interesting study in abstraction.
This picture is more about shadows than fire escapes.
