
This dramatic monument marks the resting spot of five individuals who where charged, convicted and executed for the infamous Haymarket Square massacre of the 1880s (?). The government railroaded a conviction on the flimsiest of evidence. It was a notable travesty of American justice.

After intercession by Clarence Darrow, several people who barely escaped the hangman's noose were later pardoned by Illinois Governor Altgeld because they had not received a fair trial. Such honesty destroyed his career and, in some sense, his will to live. He is buried in Graceland Cemetery.
