Graceland Cemetery

Wealthy people sometimes commission great architects to design memorials for them or, as in this case, their wives. Such was the case when Henry Getty had Louis Sullivan, the noted architect, design this mausoleum in 1890. Getty had made a fortune in lumber and could afford the best.

 

The Getty tomb definitely mixes art and architecture in an effective way: Art Nouveau and geometric elements coexist in a pleasing combination. Some commentators call this structure "the beginning of modern architecture."

 

The design of the brass gates has that organic feel that characterizes Art Nouveau.
