Oak Woods is not only home to 7,000 Confederate dead but to a statue of the man who perhaps more than any other contributed to the conflict that led to those deaths. Only Lincoln's masterful ability to lead the nation could have sustained the North through four years of such travail.
Chicago is the city where you would expect to see a statue of Honest Abe on every corner but it is not so; they are few and far between.
In fact, I know of only three: one in Lincoln Park near North Street (which runs East-West), one on the North Side in a small park just off Clark and Ridge (the "Young Lincoln"), and this one in Oak Woods Cemetery on th South side.
