Rosehill Sentiment

It is certainly unfair to single out Rosehill in any discussion of cemetery sentiment and sentimentality. Every American thanatopolis has its own excesses and, indeed, our definition of what is bad taste changes with time. I have seen a number of mourning bronze women in Chicago cemeteries.

Grief is an intense emotion. Here the family has decided to express that intensity in a way that no passerby could miss. This expression of grief may possibly make the leap from sentiment to sentimentality. You be the judge.

Here we have another enclosed sculpture -- a full size creation -- raises the question of sentiment versus sentimentality. The feeling I get is one of great sadnes.

I find an intense sadness in the face of this woman. It seems highly appropriate for a place of death.
