Our tour begins at the intersection
of Belmont and Sheridan where the heroic statue dedicated to General Philip
Sheridan is surrounded by endless automobile traffic -- personal cavalry for
the 20th Century.
This is a casting from the same original that produced its brother on Massachusetts Avenue in Washington, DC. Subtle it is not. But then the sculptor, Gutson Borglum, is not noted for subtlety but for monumentality and blatant expression. Witness his other creation, Mount Rushmore.
