Question: With the $60 Contributing membership,
does one also get the autographed Program book in
addition to access to the Contributors Party?
The $60 Contributing Membership doesn't include
an autographed program book. The theory is that
you will be able to get autographs during the
Contributors party. The Supporting Membership
(which does get you a fully autographed program
book) was primarily designed to allow those
who could not attend Visions, to still get
autographs of all the guests, however, you
can purchase a Supporting Membership even if
you attend (it's the best way to avoid the long

Thank you for Visions '97. I enjoyed myself and I
have a few points I would like to mention. First,
I have attended every Visions con since the
beginning. It is the one time of the year when I
really get to relax and enjoy myself. I
particularly have become interested in "side"
attractions of Visions (such as fan panels,
writers panels, and some of the odds and ends that
show up). As such I really liked Jeremy Bentham's
presentation of Who sites in Great Britian. Jeremy
Bentham and John Peel are two recurring Visions
guests that I enjoy, especially since I wouldn't
even know about them except through Visions. The
Fan panels are nice because, once again, they show
a world of activity that I wouldn't encounter
anywhere else (I do not attend any other sci-fi
cons except Visions). The movie theatres are
similar as well. Even though there are more and
more Brit tapes coming available, the bulk of new
stuff that I get to see is in your very theatres!
I usually find a new series or two every year and
then hunt for tapes in the dealer's room. These
exposures really help to make Visions a treat
because I really look forward to more than the
guest list. Through your con I have become
interested in so many subjects that I would never
have known about otherwise: Robin of Sherwood,
Blake's Seven, Red Dwarf, the 10%ers, Brittas
Empire, and so on and so forth... The only
negative comment that I have is that this past
years con was different in a somewhat bad way
(for me). The Jeri Ryan thing was way out of
control!!! Did I see things correctly? -was there
a separate registration just for her? Although she
seemed nice and many guests were delighted to see
her, I began feeling like I was at an AMERICAN
Trekkie convention, an

Just a thought on guests. If you wanted to get a guest related to the "Highlander" television series, F Braun McAush (please forgive me if I'm misspelling the name) is a fascinating speaker. I heard him describe his experiences as swordmaster on the set at a convention a couple of years ago. He may not be as big a draw as one of the actors, but the behind the scenes stuff is interesting too and he really has some interesting stuff to share.

I had a wonderful time at Visions97 with my nephew but have one complaint. We waited our full time in the autograph lines and were not happy to see Visions staff walk right in and to the front of the line to get theirs and spend extra time talking to the guests and making the people in the lengthy line wait that much longer. Also, some in wheelchairs went to the front (which is fine in itself) but got out of the chair for a photo with the stars. That wasted time and there is a separate session for that. The Visions staff just stood and watched. I don't think I would be allowed to do the same. If the staff enforces some of the rules, they should enforce them to all. Plus, the space for the lines were wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs. Other than that, the guests were great and so was the hotel. Thanks!

Mulling over Visions '97, I see a couple of things which were troubling. 1. The Photographs: lighting seemed inadequate. I had 400 speed film in my camera and got back grey-mist photos. If you could boost up the lighting a bit, it would help. 2. Rumor has it that the con staff is thinking of getting rid of the Fan Dealers Room. PLEASE DON'T! I attend because of the Fan Dealer Room- to see fan friends-- Prydonians of Prynceton, Horizon, ROS, etc. Please put them in a closet if you must, but please, please save the fan room. 3. 1998 is the 20th anniversary of Blake's 7. I don't expect a big blow-out like Doctor Who got in '93, but SOMETHING NICE SHOULD BE PLANNED, ok? Blake's 7 fandom is small but close-knit and vocal. Please consider a small celebration for my favorite British program. And no, just because Horizon is having Deliverence con, don't think you can get off without a 20th anniversary nod! Other than that, you run a first class con, with wonderfully friendly and helpful volunteers and staff. Thanks for 7 years of fun (I missed the first con). Good luck with '98's con.

The Kodak Gold Max claims to be some kind of self adjusting, multi-speed film. I won't pretend to be an expert. All I know is I took pictures outdoors in daylight, indoors with a flash, in the photorooms without a flash, and even a few on the guests on stage without a flash and they all looked great. I will definitely load my camera with it for next year's convention and recommend it if anyone asks. Of course, I'm not quite sure why anyone would take the photographic advice of someone who still ocassionally sticks her thumb in front of the lens.... :o)

I don't own a great, big fancy camera. I've got a Kodak with autofocus. I used that new Gold Max film and took my film to a good lab. The pictures taken in the photo rooms came out beautifully. I don't think you could have taken better photos with a flash.

Thanks to EVERYONE for their cooperation with the no flash policy
this year ( HME Visions 97 ). It was definitly better for the guests
eyes. Slight problem though ! Some of you had only ASA 100 film in
your cameras. This was too slow a film. Please use ASA 800-1000.
Many people said that high speed film was grainy, WRONG !!!!
A properly exposed negative will have no grain in the print.
The grain will not show ! That brings us to camera choice.
A inexpensive throw-away camera with built in flash is NOT
the camera of choice at the con with a no flash policy. Please
buy a higher quality auto focus, auto exposure, auto everything
camera. A few brands come to mind.....shop around for the best
price. All are wonderful picture makers. Provided you use a good
photo lab !! Olympus Stylist, Olympus Infinity, Pentax IQ zoom,
Cannon Sureshots and of course Nikon. Get the literature on these
makes and make an informed decision. Now to you folks who had
cameras that did not work. Most of them were too old to be worth
fixing. So re-read this and buy a new camera ! (by the way I'm
also a certified repairman).
Next year if the no flash policy continues we will have more
POWERFUL LIGHTS !! On to a more personal note....It sure was
great to see everyone again. I had a great time and made many
new friends. A special thanks to all the people who staffed
the photo rooms. If you have any photo Question Please E-Mail
me at K-4sb@msn.com. In the subject field put " Visions Photos"

with lots of shit from various "fans" who just don't seem to
understand the meaning of the word "No"! You were all showing

The guests were triffic, really triffic; Sheelagh made me cry!
Pat put up with Jeff quite graciously, I thought; Julie was
fantastic at the V-show (as was Jeff); loved the puppet of
Peter; maybe next time Fraser will come on stage in his kilt?!;
Sally was so nice, and Garry was an R-rated hoot!
One question: when will video tapes from the con be made available?
(and might the closing ceremonies one be subtitled "Moon over Chicago"?)
Thanks for a great con; see you next year!!!

I'm concerned about the no-flash photo policy stated on this web
site. All I have is a simple 110 camera--all it takes is one type
of film, so I have to use flash. I have bought polariods before,
but I prefer both because polaroid fades. It's rather late notice
--a lot of fans are not on the net, so it will be a rather unpleasant
surprise for them when they arrive. And it's too late for me to go
out, buy, and learn to use a new camera. So I find this policy an
undue hardship. A lot of fans are going to have spoilt pictures.
Besides after all my difficulties in getting down to the convention
in the first place--I'm having trouble in getting off from work,
and I had requested this time off months ago--I find it one more
hassle I'd rather not take. And I'm not the only person who is
having trouble getting this weekend off. Anyone who works retail
--in my case I work for a bank--is going to have trouble getting
off the busiest shopping weekend of the year. I know you rely on
volunteer help, but have you ever considered a different weekend?
My boss wants it on another weekend. BELIEVE ME. So the no-flash
policy is just another headache in a series of headaches.

As I mentioned in the previous post the speed of your film is very
important in getting goot photos at the con. Now we will all have
the opportunity to get really professional looking photos in the
photo rooms !! Visions 97 will be the first con to use professional
lighting in the photo rooms. I have used this type of lighting for
years and it renders wonderful photos. We will have two 36in
umbrella style lights in each room. They will have DAYLIGHT
balanced bulbs in them. What does this mean to you? Nothing!
Just use asa 400 or faster film. If you have a point and shoot
autofocus camera keep it on " auto " with the flash turned off.
If you have a SLR with manual settings I will have a chart of
film speeds with shutter speeds and f stops that you can use.
These will give you perfect negatives. The rooms will have a
great new look also. One more time, Keep your batteries fresh
and clean your lens.
See you there, Ken Hough Photographic Services

Dear One And All,
As one of the photographers who is also a PRO PHOTOGRAPHER,
I take the photos of the Con Members and Actors in the one
of the photo rooms. I'd liket to make sure all of you have
the following: FILM in your cameras: ASA 400 or higher. The
reason for this is that in the unlikely event your flash
does not work the speed of the film will work with the room
light. FYI: The photo rooms lighting will allow you to
photograph with asa 400 with shutter settings of 1/60
at f 4 and get a good negative. In the autograph room
standing in line: 1/60 at f2.8. Another GREAT film is
KODAK GOLD 1600. This allows a shutter speed of 1/125
at f 5.6 in the photo room and 1/125 at f 4 in the
autograph line.
Also please put FRESH BATTERIES in your cameras and Electronic
flashes, Make sure your cameras are on when you hand them to
us. And make sure your cameras work. Visions 96 we had a total
of 29 cameras that did not work the first time we were handed
them , this just wasted time for everyone. Sooooooo Please make
sure everything works.
See you there and have fun, Ken Hough Photographic Services.

of the reason is because not all the same dealers show up every year. I'll
mention it to the folks who are responsible for the dealers rooms, and
perhaps we can put something up closer to the convention. - JPG
I'm interested in coming to Visions this year, but nowhere on your site
do I see the hotel price. Don't you know? It's rather an important
consideration for deciding if attendance fits in one's budget, and I'd
rather not call long distance to the US to find out. Other cons list
their hotel prices, so why don't you?
- 6/29/97
Oops! Sorry about that. Rooms at the Hyatt (for Visions 97) are USD$80
per room, per night. Each room can have up to 4 people (the hotel can
provide roll-a-way beds) for the $80 price. I've also placed this
information on our web site at ~tardis/hr.html. - JPG
The idea that the site is logging whose machines are hitting the
webserver is a little disconcerting from a privacy standpoint. If
you want to let us know who is hitting the site, provide a search engine
on the guestbook, which is a voluntary thing. - warp eight bot, 6/23/97
Privacy is very important to me personally, and I do my best to ensure
the privacy of others, therefore I take your concern quite seriously.
However, I'm having a difficult time understanding how individual privacy
is being compromised in how our site is managed. The stats.html data is
not only screened of individual IP addresses, it is also screened at the
machine/host/client level. Information is only shown at the company/school/ISP
level, and unless a particular company has only a couple of employees, it
is impossible to correlate this data to anyone in particular, and by and
large, it can't be narrowed down beyond 1 in thousands even if we had a
list of names. We are actually quite proud to show that we get visitors
from around the world and from an incredible cross section of America as well.
We also ask people who "register" at our site, if they want us to hold
their name/address private, or if we can share that information with
other convention organizers.
I'm also wondering if your comments are prompted by the notice that appears
identifying you as being from CRL Network Services. Indeed, I can understand
a chill that occurs, much the same as someone who answers the phone by using
your name (because they have callerID). However, it is certainly not the
intention of myself (as Visions Webweaver) or anyone else on our committee,
to compromise the privacy of any of our visitors, attendees, or guests (or
anyone, for that matter).
If you would like me to remove your company/school from my database so that
you don't see the welcome, and quantity of visits will not be logged, I
would be happy to do that.
Also, there are now companies that will offer "false IDs" for web browsing
privacy. I don't know how they work, or what they do, but it's something
to consider.
John Golkosky (JPG), tardis@xnet.com - Visions Webweaver
Just a comment to say that I have thoroughly enjoyed all my Visions
experiences. (I have been going since 1993.)
Jim Byrnes would be great guest! I went to Syndi-con in Baltimore this
year (they could really learn a lot from you guys about how to run a
convention.) Jim brought his band and gave a concert - it was an
absolutely wonderful experience. I realize that you already have the
variety show (and Jim isn't even confirmed yet), but perhaps if he is
around in future years, you could persuade him to do a concert at Visions.
He really is a very talented musician.
I think the variety of guests is first-rate this year. I especially like
CCH Pounder, as I have seen her in many things. (Although, as I've said
before, I don't even need any guests to bring me to Visions each year,
I would go just to see the friends I've made!)
Keep up the great work. Also, a side "hi" to Bob and Patti (did I spell
that right?) It was great getting to really meet you at Gallifrey (I was
Rhonda's tag-a-long.) See you in November. - 6/12/97
The mail is so slow. My group wanted to register earlier but the hotels
did not have any info in May97. We want to get fees paid and signed up
to volunteer but the hot lines are non-cooperative. Please advise, Is
there any way to register via email or telephone using a bit of plastic
rather than paper?????? - 6/12/97
Yes, the mail is slow, but it's still the cheapest route. Unfortunately,
VISA/MC etc... charges a fee to use them for charging you. Therefore,
given the choice of increasing membership fees, or sticking with paper
mail, we chose to stick with paper mail. The Hyatt should have information
on our convention, but if they don't, try 1-800-822-0666 (a Travel Agency
that should know) or the Hyatt at their local number (847) 696-1234.
The hotel rate for Visions 97 is $80 per room per night. As far as
volunteering goes, specific assignments are not defined until the weekend
of the convention, therefore, timing of sign-up is not critical. - JPG
How about inviting Gary back this year. His knowledge of Dr Who makes
him an easy guest on any panel. Plus he's a hell of a lot of fun!
Cheers!
Robert Franks - 6/6/97
Indeed, Gary was a great guest, but he was just at Visions 96! Perhaps in
another year or two. Make sure you vote for him on your Visions Vote form!
- JPG
I was wondering if you've ever considered inviting a make-up artist
from one of the shows - it might be a lot of fun to have something
set up where people can get their faces and hands painted
(like at fairs and street carnivals) with a sci-fi theme...
Just a suggestion... :) - 5/22/97
We have recently added Sheelagh Wells to our list of invited guests. She
has given Make-up workshops in the past, and may do so again, although
we haven't yet discussed this with her as of yet. - JPG
I just have a short question regarding registering. In the Rookie Guide
it talks about picking up your registration packet on Thursday evening or
Friday morning. I only can go on Saturday and Sunday (I have prepaid)
and was wondering if it's the same procedure on Saturday morning as on
Friday morning. Thanks. This'll be my first convention and I'm already
getting excited. - 5/17/97
Registration packets can be picked up at any time Registration is open
for business. Registration is located on the lower level near the lower
end of the escalators. Hours of operation for 1997 are not yet finalized,
however, it will probably be similar to past Visions: Thursday 6-9p,
Friday 8a-5p,6p-9p, Saturday 8a-5p, and Sunday 9a-2p. - JPG
I've never been to Visions before, but I'm hoping to attend this year.
I've noticed that you had Doctor Who New Adventures authors at the con
the last couple of years, and I was wondering if you were planning on
inviting them back again this year. Are you? - 5/14/97
As of right now, we do not have any plans to invite any authors of New
Who adventures to Visions 97, however, our guest list is still in a
state of flux. Keep an eye on the guest status page for the latest
status on invited/confirmed guests. - JPG
I pre-registered for the first time at Visions 96, for Visions 97.
One of the reaons I did this was to get a low number. However,
when I received my registration card, my number was anything but.
I was later told this is because pre-registrations are alphabetized.
I'm sure there are others like myself who feel this is not the best
way, since my last name is way at the end of the alphabet. The Visions
staff has been extremely helpful in getting this resolved, and suggested
I give the name of someone I'd like to register with in order to avoid
thiis happening. I really don't want to impose on anyone by doing this.
Why can't pre-registrations be first come, first numbered? I don't want
to go through the agravation and dissapointment again, even though the
Visions staff has bent over backwards to help me, it makes more work for
them, too. May I suggest a notebook full of lined paper? The lines can
be numbered and whomever is at the desk pre-registering guests can enter
each name beside the next number. If this is feasible let me know, I
will even donate the book! Thanks for listening. - 5/7/97
Barb: When I wrote you and said it was alphabatized it was because the
pre-regestration slips were dropped and numbers were not on them. That
will not happen next year. Numbers will be assigend as pre-regese is done.
Concerning the variety show that is the best that I can do.
Bob
I have never attended Visions before but am looking forward to attending
this year. I noticed that most of the comments on the page are from
previous attendees, which is always the best evidence of a great con.
Recently, I have had the pleasure of dealing with the staff of Visions
on another professional matter. For those of you who have never attended
Visions and are thinking about it, I just want to let you know that these
people know what they are doing -- having been involved with running a
very large convention for the past three years, I am firmly convinced
that Visions has got to be the best run convention around. - 4/27/97
Thanks for your kind comments! We hope to see you there! - JPG
Dear Sirs/Madames
I run an approved fan club in the UK for Jerry Doyle, called Garibaldi's
Security Squad.
I am exploring the idea of travelling to Chicago for your convention in
November. Jerry does know me, as I have met him half a dozen times.
If I do come, I will write a review, and it is my policy that you receive
a complimentary copy.
I will keep you informed of my plans.
I wish you success for the event. - 4/26/97
Just for your records, Jerry will be here only on Friday and
Saturday.
Bob
[I have been told that Jerry will be doing "more of the autograph sessions"
because of his shorter than usual visit. - JPG]
Why were there no Forever Knight guest invited to Visions 97? - 4/24/97
Unfortunately, the fan base of Forever Knight within Visions is not yet
strong enough to sustain Forever Knight guests every year. As of right
now we do not have any plans for inviting anyone associated with FK,
but the year is still young! - JPG
Get those people at the BBC to produce another Doctor Who movie!
That one shown on FOX TV last year with the new Doctor was really good.
- 4/22/97
We wish we could. Unfortunately, "the powers that be" are not currently
interested in doing any additional new Doctor Who at this time. If you
would like to write,
here are some addresses. - JPG
Looking forward to Visions `97. How about getting Jeff Conaway &
Duncan Regher to appear together? Duncan co-starred with Jeff in a
short lived series called Wizards & Warriors. Duncan has also appeared
in guest shots in Star Trek TNG, DS9 and possibly Voyager. - 4/22/97, Rose
Although Jeff Conaway did not show very well in our survey at Visions '96,
that was before he was promoted to Head of Security. Perhaps if his
popularity in our survey results improves... - JPG
Hi! I was wondering why there is no one invited from Blakes
7 this year? - 4/1/97, Cathy Palmer-Lister
At this time I have had to cut back on Blakes 7 and added Red Drawf which we
did not have last year.
Bob
I have been going to Visions since 1990 and have loved every one.
Each year the organization of the con has gotten better.
Keep it British (Dr. Who, Blake's 7, Red Drawf, Robin Hood,
Lovejoy (maybe some day a guest will agree to come), etc.
but love other guests too (Star Trek, Bab 5, X-files, Kung Fu)
See ya in 97!
- 3/4/97
Visions 96 was fantastic! Colin Baker was a great guest, as
were all the other Dr. Who guests. The Bablylon 5 guests
were great too! Babylon 5 and Dr. Who are the best sci-fi series
ever. Having guests and movies from both of these shows guarantees
that I and my friends will continue to attend these in the future.
Having it the weekend after Thanksgiving and in Rosemont is the
best timing and location. Looking forward to Visions 97.
- 2/4/97, Tom
I really enjoyed Visions this year (although it wouldn't hurt to get
Elisabeth Sladen). But I had two problems with Visions this year.
The first, What was the matter with Lalla Ward and Deborah Watling?
I don't want to be criticizing, but all they did was sit there. When
I got their autographs they just sat there and didn't say anything,
and when I got my picture taken with them, all they did was sit in
their chairs and talk about material!!! I mean, We come in and like
worship these people and they have these attitudes like "Why am I
here". I mean you see people like that, and there's Colin Baker
and Sarah Sutton. And I would just like to say how incredibily nice
they were. When I had my picture taken with them, they smiled, were
standing, shook my hand, said hullo, said they liked my shirt, They
put their arms aroung my shoulder,And Colin Baker even said I smelled
nice!!! It was like a dream!! They were so nice. I know it must be
hard at all these conventions, and I admire the extra stuff they put
into it for the fans.My other problem was the timing.I think you
should have it like it was in 95.If you go for a picture, you can't
be in line for an autograph. I found it hard and confusing. Well, I
just wanted to say how much I love Visions. I'm very sorry if I
offended anybody, it's just that I wait all year for this convention
and am so excited, I guess I was just disappointed. So sorry. Visions
rules. Please have Lis Sladen back again. Thanks!
- 1/23/97, S.Smith
Some of our guests certainly seem to be in a better mood than others.
Unfortunately, we can't always convince them to be a little more
cheerful. It may be as simple as trying to readjust to the time
shift, or perhaps a fan before you wore them a little thin. It's
tough to tell. Also, some guests just look at this as a 'gig' to make
some money, rather than as a chance to meet their fans.
With regards to the timing, we're eliminating the autograph ticket
system. Will this help? We'll find out in a few months!
I too, would like to have Lis back for a visit (even being on committee
does not guarantee a particular guest will be invited). - JPG
Actually, I just had a question. I didn't get to go to Visions this
year although I'm really hoping to make it next year. Anyway, my
question is: I sent in money for the supporting membership. I got
the postcard which was my receipt and I have my canceled check but
I still haven't received the autographed program. Should I have
received it my now? If not, when can I expect to receive it?
I've been checking my mail every day looking for it.
Thanks for any help you can give me.
- 1/9/97
We apologize for the delay. Autographed program books were mailed
out in February to all of you who paid a supporting membership.
(Thanks for your support!)
Many of us who prepare for and work the
convention lose a good portion of November and December due to
the convention. We also lose the last half of December due to the
holidays. Then in January, we're still catching up with our non-con
lives. If you have not yet received yours, please let us know! - JPG
I am very upset that you no longer offer Visions videos. Is there a
possibility that you will offer them once again in the future? Please
say yes as i was about to place a large order!
I know you state no other info is available but I hope this is not
something permanent.
- 1/8/97
I'm sorry, but no additional information can be provided at this time.
Should this situation change, we will certainly post such information
at our web site and on our hotline. We regret any inconvenience this
may cause. - JPG
There are not enough things to do at night!!! There need to be more
room parties and parties in general. Please bring back the Red Dwarf
guests I really enjoyed meeting them in 94 and 95. Also, invite more
DW or B7 guests and forget the Robin of Sherwood people. Thats all for
now thanx for listening to me rant. - 1/14/97, Cousin Shirley
Visions needs more nightlife.. As in something other than the variety
show on saturday night and a dance on friday--though I did kind of
enjoy the mst337 thingie on friday--I still think that there should be
dance.. Maybe I am slightly more in favor of this as I go to bed rather
late at most cons, but the atmosphere should be a little lighter. A lot
of people seem to have little fun but a lot of hassle. Also, different
subject, the autograph tickets are a very good idea--but maybe they
should be given out with registration. My problem with them is simple--
you stand in line TWO hours before an autograph session just so that
you are in line for when they are given out one hour before the session.
My thought on this problem is this--if people are in line they are
going to stay in line the whole time--so since they are the ones who
will get the tickets why not hand them out early? (if there is a line)..
Different subject, I really thought that Yee Jee Tso was an excellent
guest as well as Michael Keating, Richard Biggs and Claudia Christain.
Thank you for listening to me and see you next year..
- 12/19/96
We also saw a number of comments on our comment forms requesting more
evening events. We'll be looking into what we can do to provide some
additional entertainment in the evening.
The autograph ticket system is being scrapped for V'97. More information
is forthcoming in your flyer (due out late March, early April).
We're glad you had a good time and enjoyed many of our guests! See
you at Visions '97! - JPG
Just read the other comments. I, too, would be interested in seeing what
guests are requested by the convention attendees - just curious, I guess.
- 4/3/97
When will you post comments from the Visions 96 evaluation forms?
- 2/18/97
Throughout the year I enjoyed being able to check in on the Visions
web site, especially to read the comments and their responses.
What I'd really love to see is a sort of tally for the comment
forms: in other words, what guests were most frequently named
as suggestions for Visions 97? Don't worry about giving the
public false expectations; it's more in the interest of showing
us just where everyone else's interests lie!
- 12/5/96, shill
Me too! (I'm the lucky one who gets to compile all the data this year.)
All of the data and comments from the forms this year will be placed on
our site in late April. - JPG (Ok, perhaps mid-May...)
From the Visions '96 Program Book: "Sign up for a 3-day pass before
the end of Visions '96 and as usual, save an additional $5 off the
lowest 3-day price!"
NO WHERE IN THERE DOES IT SAY WE HAVE TO ASK FOR THE $5 DISCOUNT.
- 12/4/96
Sorry. Our mistake! If you paid full price *during* the convention,
please let us know and we'll be happy to send you a refund of the
overpayment. We apologize for this oversight. - JPG
I loved the Visions '95 convention. I had hoped to make it to the
'96 but was unable to make it. I was upset to see that there were
no Red Dwarf guests signed up, though. PLEASE bring Red Dwarf to
Visions '97.
Another thought is a convention in St. Louis. . .Union Station would be
a great place. . .
- 11/30/96
We have invited Chris Barrie to Visions '97. Stay tuned to our
Web site and Hotline for the latest!
Unfortunately, the entire Visions staff lives in the Chicago area.
For us to host a convention somewhere else would be a logistical
nightmare. :-( - JPG
I did not know how else to thank the people in the registration desk at
the Hyatt O'Hare who took the time to find out whether my daughter had
arrived safely there (she forgot to phone me, with all the excitement
of the great convention) and put a message for her on the board. I
could not attend with her this year but I am enjoying the convention
through her comments and looking forwrd to lots of stories on B5,
Dr Who and even Blakes 7 (I thought I was the only only one who
remembered the show, thanks for letting me know that there
more like me out there).
Congratulations for a great job, the site, the convention,
the people on the registration desk are all great.
A grateful mother
- 11/30/96
We are glad you finally made contact with your daughter (and we
hope you'll both be able to make it back next year)! There are
certainly a number of minor complaints about the Hyatt, however,
overall, they do a pretty good job, and this is a good example of
where the Hyatt went the extra mile. Thanks for letting us know! - JPG
I was wondering about the drive to get Dr. Who back on television and
was wondering why, in light of all the Dr. Who fans at your convention
and all the fans that will be at Gallifrey97, why aren't there petitions
available for all the attendees to sign, asking Fox and the BBC to bring
back Dr. Who. I don't know how many people attend Visions, but I know
it's a large number. I also know that between four and five hundred fans
attended Gallifrey96 and at least that many will attend next February,
so why aren't the two largest conventions having people express themselves
by signing petitions. I believe petitions with over a thousand
signatures would do something to impress Fox and the BBC.
Thank you and God for the two Dr. Who conventions
- 11/28/96
Unfortunately, more than petitions, Fox and the BBC look more closely
at cold hard facts/numbers. The less than anticipated ratings received
during the airing of the new Fox Who tell the studios more than a
petition signed during a convention dedicated to the show. :-(
We can only hope that influential people like Phil Segal and others
like him, can continue to push for more productions in the future. - JPG
The Love Con soon will be making another run... the love con...
promising something for everyone...
Though I can't make it this year, let me know how many happy couples
meet at Visions. Your record is quite good...
- 11/8/96
Yes, it seems apparent to us that Visions is turning into quite the
event to bring people closer together! In fact rumor has it, there
will be a couple (who met at Visions) spending their honeymoon at
Visions '97! We are aware that quite a few marriages have been
spawned (no pun intended) from Visions. We hope to have a page
dedicated to them on our site in the future. - JPG
Last year was the first time I'd been to a Visions Convention.
It was the coolest thing I'd ever seen in my life. What made it
really cool was that my favorite actor from Blake's 7, Paul Darrow,
was there, and I'm desperatly in love with him (not scary love,
but being sixteen I just happen to have pictures of him on my
wall and you know, stuff like that.)
I'm not gonna make it to Visions this year, but I would love to
see him there again. Please be sure to invite him, I'm sure he'll come.
- 11/5/96
I think you have a great site, and I wish I lived closer so I could
attend the convention. But Tucson AZ is just too far away on Thanks-
giving weekend. I must spend the time with my grandchildren, even
though I love "DR.WHO" and would love to meet the "stars" you are
having at the convention.
I am writing this to ask how do I get a "supporting" membership? It's
my understanding that I would get each "star's" autograph? I desperately
want the "Dr. Who" actor's autographs appearing at the convention.
- 10/24/96
Yes, a supporting membership entitles you to a fully signed Visions
Program Book. The cost of the supporting membership is $25 (Visions '96).
The pre-registration form can be used to request
such a membership.
I enjoy getting your newsletter. please keep sending it to me.
-why are your conventions always held so far north into the city? It
would be nice to see a convention held closer to or in the loop, or somewhwere
in the suburbs. the chicago south expo center might be one location to consider.
doing so would enable more suburbanites to atttend conventions.
- 10/22/96, barry r, vronay
There are a number of reasons we are at the Hyatt O'Hare. First is the
need for space. With the hundreds of rooms needed each night, we need
to be in an area where hotels are numerous, and large. Second, we
want to be near a major airport. This allows our out of town attendees
easy (free) access between the airport and the hotel. They already pay
for airfare, so free transport to the hotel is quite welcome by them.
It also makes it easier for getting so many of our international Guests
to and from the airport.
With respect to local living attendees (about half of our attendance
is from metropolitan Chicago) if we moved to any other location
around Chicago, it would really only displace who is being inconvenienced
more. The folks who live in Schaumburg or Mount Prospect would then
complain why we couldn't locate it in the northern suburbs.
Personally, I drive 40 minutes to/from work every day. Since most of
Chicago is less than an hour away from O'Hare (traffic congestion
not withstanding), we feel it's a small inconvenience considering it
allows you the option of sleeping at home to save on the cost of a
hotel room.
In all I found Visions95 to be an excellent convention. The guests were
marvelous and I really enjoyed the fact that they were accessable and friendly.
The cabaret was interesting although the masquerade was a little smaller
than I am used to. The fact that it started early on Friday made it more
worthwhile for those of us coming from outside the Chicago area. I had
a great time and am really looking forward to this year's convention.
- 10/10/96, JO
Although you have not posted it on your web page, in the snail-mail
newsletter that I received, you described a new autograph policy in which
the guests presign photos. Personally, I think this is a BAD IDEA.
I've been to several Visions cons and the '94 policy was fine to me. I
understand that some people abuse the lines by having the guests sign
many items, but this shouldn't penalize the rest of us. I
certainly hope that we will be able to bring our own items. - 10/6/96, David Brauner
Rest assured there is no restriction on what type of item you want to have
signed (so long as it can be safely carried by you, and it's not a part
of your anatomy that the guest doesn't wish to autograph). At the
*impromptu* sessions, some of our guests may be offering only their
autographed photos for sale. They may be presigned and then personalized
at the time of sale, or they may simply be autographed at that time.
It depends on the guest. However at the standard
sessions they *WILL* autograph your personal items as in the past. There
is, however, a limitation on ONE item per trip through the line. There
are three autograph sessions (1 per day), and one guest signing at a
rate of about 100-150 per hour means only about 400 or so autographs
throughout the weekend. With 1500 attendees, you can see we really
need to enforce such a limitation.
- JPG, 11/8/96
I have never been to your con and was trying do decide if it is the type
of convention that I would enjoy.
1) How many people are you expecting?
2) Is there a dedicated "party floor"?
3) Is this a party con (have 3 or more room parties per night on average)?
1) We typically have around 1500 attendees. Not all of them are three day
attendees, and at times, even I wonder where they all are, but they're
there.
2) No (at least not that I'm aware of). The atmosphere at the Hyatt isn't
really condusive to major party outbreaks.
3) The only parties endorsed by the convention are the Contributor's Party
prior to the beginning of the convention (attended by the Guests of the
convention as well), and the Volunteer's Party (aka the Dead Dog Party)
also attended by the guests, after the convention ends.
There *are* room parties, but we don't track or endorse them. If they
cause a problem for the hotel (like if they get loud or rowdy), then
they cause a problem for us as well, but by and large, we don't mind.
Room parties tend to be advertised either on the flip-chart thingy
by Operations or in rec.arts.drwho. You may wish to toss out the idea
on r.a.dw to see what interest level there is.
Visions is more known for bringing the guests and attendees together
on a more personal level. We also typically have a dozen or more
(one year we had 28, I think) Guests to keep you occupied as long as
possible. Along with both parties, we have a Guest luncheon for
Guest socializing, we have guest panels, auto, and photo sessions,
and occasionally you can even catch them in the hotel bar.
- JPG, 9/30/96
Not a comment so much as a question... I notice that your "guest status"
page mentions no guests from Red Dwarf. What gives?
Jeremy
We almost had Craig Charles on the hook this year, but due to a
scheduling conflict, he was not able to make it. Because of our
list of shows already at 5, and our interest in keeping our
guest count more manageable, we decided rather than pursue another
Red Dwarf guest, that we would give RD a rest this year. Survey
results are the primary source of guest/show selection, so PLEASE
take the time to fill them out. We REALLY want to invite the most
popular guests, and the only way we know who they are is to ask
you, the paying customers. - JPG, 9/30/96
Where's John Levene?
Although I find myself defending the number of Who guests we have already
this year, I also believe there is such a thing as "too much of a good
thing". We've had John with us three times of the last 5 years, so
statistically speaking, it's possible he will be back again quite soon,
but only time will tell. A strong showing in the surveys has the biggest
impact on who we invite (hint, hint)! - JPG, 9/30/96
Thank You for inviting Mark Ryan back. I just saw that he is
a confirmed guest for 1996. Please continue to invite British
guests especially Doctor Who but also Red Dwarf and Robin of Sherwood.
Currently, 10 of 13 of our guests this year are from, or are associated
with British shows. As always, Doctor Who will always be the core of
our convention. There will be years when (with the exception of Doctor
Who) some shows may not be featured at our convention. There are various
reasons for this including providing room to try a new show or theme,
or because a show is fading in popularity (based on our surveys). There
will always be diehard fans for certain shows, and there will be years
where we regret we must disappoint quite a few fans of a particular
show previously featured at our convention,
but we try our best every year to provide the most enjoyable weekend
for the most people possible. - JPG, 9/1/96
I checked the phone message a few weeks ago. you guys shouldn't be
discouraged if there's a small number of guests. That just means
they're all working. Isn't that what we want? I would like to cast
my vote for an astronaut guest. That would be great if possible.
Since you last checked, we've been able to confirm many new guests
at Visions this year. Here, take a look!
An astronaut? It's been suggested that we consider a speaker from
NASA including possibly an astronaut, or someone to discuss such
fascinating topics as the Hubble Telescope or the possibility of
life on Mars and similar Mars missions in the works. - JPG, 9/1/96
You listed in the Guest Status, that Claudia Christian
portrays Commander Ivanova on Blakes 7 - this is incorrect.
The show is Babylon 5. - 8/13/96
As a fan of both shows, I don't know how I could have
messed up this bad, but it does provide interesting
crossover potential ;-) Thanks for noticing and letting
us know. - JPG 9/1/96
I had a wonderful time at Visions '95! My favourite part was the panels
and autographs. I just can't wait until November!! - 6/11/96
Thanks! We'll do our best to make sure this year is wonderful too! - JPG 7/25/96
Why must you have your conventions at such a far away location? Why not try
a hotel in the south suburbs of Chicago for a change? Not every one is able
to travel to the north part of Chicago! - 4/22/96
We're sorry to hear that you are having trouble getting to the convention.
Unforutnately, Chicago's public transportation system within the suburban
area is far behind that of many other cities in the world and you appear to
be one of those who is suffering because of it.
There are many factors which go into the decision of which hotel will be
the site for a Visions convention. Some of these are proximity to the
airport and other major avenues of travel into and out of Chicago,
availability of other public transportation (such as it is), room price,
number of sleeping rooms, amount of available meeting space within the
hotel itself, security of the guest floor, free parking availability and
willingness of the hotel to work with us. We have investigated exhaustively
throughout the Chicagoland area (and continue to check up on our research
each year) and have always come back to the Hyatt (except in 1992 when we
tried the Ramada) as our hotel of choice. It is the *only* hotel we have
ever found which comes closest to meeting all of our criteria.
As to your specific request that we try a hotel on the south side of
Chicago, while we have looked into a few of them, the travel times to and
from O'Hare airport alone would make it very difficult, if not impossible
for us to use any of them. Not only would we spend a lot of time and effort
getting our guests to and from the airport but the many fans who arrive at
O'Hare (just under half of all Visions attendees fly into O'Hare) would be
faced with this as well.
For the time being at least, we have no plans to change from the Hyatt as
our site hotel. - DMS, 4/23/96
"I have gone to three different Visions and have enjoyed them immensely.
The only thing that I would like to see are props from Dr. Who. I
can't think of ever seeing any props at Visions. For example, this
year, I'd love to see props from the new Dr. Who movie (such as the
console) if Dr. Who isn't in production at the time of Visions 96.
Other then that, I hope everything stays the same." - Iceberg, 4/20/96
We're very glad to hear you've enjoyed the conventions you've attended. We
have had some Who-related things available for viewing at some of the
Visions conventions (for instance at Visions '90 there was a wonderful
display by the Not The BBC Prop Department; however, many of these items
were actually recreations of props), but since I'm not sure which three of
the six you've been able to attend, it's possible that the years you
attended have been the years when we didn't have anything on display. As
far as actual props from the show, most of these are now in private hands
all over the world and it would be difficult to assemble a large number of
them together for a display in any one location.
For the last two years we have had a terrific display set up in our dealers
room by Brian Biro. Brian's display does contain a few Doctor Who items as
well as many fantastic items from TV and movie science fiction -- Star
Trek, Star Wars, Babylon 5, Flash Gordon, Indiana Jones and more too
numerous to mention. We're pleased to say that Brian and his display will
be back again at Visions '96, so be sure to visit the dealers room and have
a look. You won't be disappointed.
As far as props from the New Who are concerned, we *will* have to wait and
see on that, of course, since so many decisions regarding a potential new
series have yet to be made and the disposition of many items will probably
depend a lot on those decisions. We'll keep your comment in mind, though,
and if it's possible for us to have any props from the new show on display,
we'll do our best to accommodate. - DMS, 4/21/96
"I attended Visions '93, and got your recent flyer regarding Visions '96.
While reading the section on improvements that you are making, I thought
of something that I forgot to mention when I was there. During the hour
that I have to wait in each line for an autograph, of course I chatted
with my neighbours, but I was missing something in the auditorium. In
fact, I missed almost every question and answer session because I was
waiting in line for either an autographs or a photo. Would it be possible
to have TV monitors in the autograph rooms displaying what is going on
in one of the auditoriums? There would have to be several all along the
windy queue, perhaps mounted near the ceiling (I'm only asking that you
climb up on ladders with heavy electronic equipment and deface hotel
property)and we wouldn't miss out on John Nathan-Turner's inciteful
Q&A while waiting to get Peter Davison's autograph. : )" - Misha
Lauenstein, 4/15/96
First off, thanks for writing to suggest ways to improve our autograph
sessions. We are always looking for new ideas and we welcome your comments.
Unfortunately, the idea you had (for the monitors) is one we have already
explored and had to reject. It is very costly and also rather difficult
logistically. We would have to literally string cable from room to room to
room all over the hotel and this would take a tremendous amount of work,
money and materials. It would also mean a lot more wires for everyone to
trip over! :-} However, we *are* exploring ways to minimize the amount of
time you have to spend waiting in lines so that you can spend more time
doing the things you want to do.
We'd also like to mention that the problem of needing to choose between a
favorite autograph session, panel or photo session (or other activity) will
always exist, no matter how much we fine tune things because Visions is
multi-track convention and we try to offer something to interest everyone
who attends. This means that sometimes you *must* choose to forego one
thing in order to do another. We know this can be a hard choice, but we
believe it's far better to offer you a variety of options rather than leave
you with not enough to do. - DMS 4/16/96
"The only complaint I have is regarding the hotel itself..there was only the
one dining hall and it was very expensive. Most of us did not have cars to
travel to more reasonably rated places to eat. However, the rest of the con
was just great. Last year was my very first time and it was absolutely the
best time I have had in my entire life! Even better than Disney World!"
- 4/5/96
Yes, unlike Disney World, our stars *are* allowed to talk! Seriously
though, we can't arrange for roller coasters, lake based laser shows,
and 70F degree temperatures, but we would if we could. We're glad you
had a great time, and we're working hard towards that same goal this year!
While it's true the hotel has limited services and higher than average
prices, there are some restaraunts about a mile away (east) including
Connie's Pizza and McDonalds. A brisk walk to be sure, that time of year, but
worth considering. Connie's (great pizza in the author's opinion) also
delivers, but the hotel (understandably) frowns upon that. Connie's will
ask you to wait for them in the hotel lobby by the doors, but it's
basically because the drivers can't really park there (the area is for loading
and unloading of hotel guests). - JPG 4/6/96
Followup from "The Mad Poetess", 4/25/95 {editorial cleansing by Visions Staff}
A piece of meal-(and travel)related advice for fans: I've read a lot of
complaints about the price of hotel food and a lot of fairly good advice
concerning restaurants a mile away and pizza delivery...
Here's something perhaps neither the fans nor the Visions folks have
thought of:
The Hyatt Regency provides free shuttle service to and from O'Hare
Airport, leaving about every fifteen minutes. There are several
restaurants and lounges at O'Hare, including a McDonald's and other fast
food places for those of us too skint to spend our pennies at the Hyatt's
good but {pricey} restaurant. We have done this for the last two cons,
and find it a satisfactory way of supplementing the tons of junk food
we stash in our luggage from home.
Also, for those commuting from anywhere near northern Indiana, and not
wanting to drive in Chicago, (I won't), consider stashing your car
(free parking) at The Tri-State Bus Station in Hammond, IN, which runs
a bus to O'Hare for about 15$ each way. From there, you just take the
aforementioned shuttle to the Hyatt, and you're home free!
See Y'all at Visions 96!
There have been some significant changes at O'Hare airport which should
be considered before attempting to run over for a bite to eat. Hotel
shuttles are currently no longer allowed to go direct to the terminals.
From what we understand, they go to an area by the old "Terminal 4",
"a 15 minute walk away from Terminal 1".
Also, the shuttle is really for the use of hotel guests for their
initial arrival from and final departure to the airport.
Although I've personally never been challenged to show I'm a guest,
if the hotel detects "unnecessary use" of the shuttles, they may
start refusing rides without some kind of proof you are arriving or
departing (like an airline/bus ticket stub).
At a minimum, you should be a registered guest (have a room key
in your possession) if you use the shuttles.

"VISIONS 95 ... enjoyed it tremendously, especially seeing Brian Blessed
at long last! What a guy!
Also enjoyed Anneke and Michael ... nice idea inviting them!
The ONLY negative thing I can say about Visions 95 is that it just
wasn't QUITE the same not having John Levene there. I hope things can
be worked out to where he can return someday.
In the wish list department, I could only ask for FRASIER HINES and
WENDY PADBURY together, and perhaps DAVID TROUGHTON. Oh, and maybe
you could see about getting some more of the former producers ...
BARRY LETTS and PHIL HINCHCLIFFE have such interesting stories to tell,
and CHRIS BARRY continues to be associated with the show as well.
Honestly, you guys do a TREMENDOUS job that runs me RAGGED every year!"
See you this November,
Chass" - The Guardians of Gallifrey, 4/1/96
"I'm disappointed that you haven't listed any of the New
Adventures authors as invited guests for '96. Kate Orman
and Paul Cornell were fantastic guests last year, really
entertaining and interesting, and I was hoping to see more
this year. All the same, Visions '95 was a great convention!" - 3/30/96
"Thank you for posting this timely comment. As it happens, you'll be
pleased to know that Paul Cornell has just recently agreed to make a return
appearance at Visions '96. We are also in contact with other NA authors.
Keep checking the page and our e-mail updates and we'll let you know as we
confirm their attendance." - 3/31/96 DMS (Visions Staff)
"I had the absolute best time at Visions '95. I met my favorite actress,
the lovely and talented Sophie Aldred and really enjoyed seeing her in
"Melvin and Maureen's Music-a-Grams." What can you say about Brian Blessed,
Gareth Thomas, Paul Darrow, and the other guests except that they are
remarkable people.." - 3/22/96
"Thank you so much for helping me to make a more informative and
entertaining newsletters [by offering press conferences]." - CF95
"If I come back next year, it will because the *guests* respect their
audience. The convention planners clearly don't." - CF95
Comments like the above certainly concern us, but we really need to
know what gave you this impression as well as some suggestions as to
what we can do to address what went wrong. We're here to make sure you
have the best weekend possible; if there's a problem, PLEASE let anyone
wearing a "gold Visions Staff badge" know, as soon as possible.
- JPG (Visions Staff)
"This is the only time I have ever been disappointed by a convention!" - CF95
"The selection in the three video rooms was great." - CF95
"Invite Mark Ryan every year!" - CF95
"Frankly, we're found many people to be nice but many were rude and overly
strange; no fun! Try having a *variety* of activities, not just functions
in which the "little people" (and I've heard several people insinuate
that's how they feel they're being treated) get to see the "celebs." Also,
try having more co-star category actors and behind-the-scenes people as
guests. Seeing the actors in great (the B5 people are terrific folks) but
if you want to build the con, you're going to have to branch out. Those of
us who are not die-hard fans of TV *stars* were bored." - CF95
"The hotel prices are totally unbelievable even for Chicago." - CF95
"This is not a threat - but a simple declarative statement: If Visions
shifts to American Sci-Fi, I will stop coming. Visions is my only access to
British Sci-Fi, TV and comedy. I can get American *any time*. The Brits are
funny, good and generous guests, terribly flattered that we make such a
fuss over them and genuinely fun. The American actors tend to be expensive
and none of the above. If the Brits go, I do too. This is my fifth Visions
and I spend $1200 every year besides the hotel costs. *You* choose." - CF95
"Some of the guests didn't seem to be enjoying themselves and *that* is
something I don't want. The guests should also be able to be themselves."
- CF95
"Much more pleasant than any Creation convention!" - CF95
"I came primarily to meet Sophie Aldred but was pleased to find all of the
guests I met so delightful and charming that I feel I made some good
friends in the entertainment industry. Brian Blessed, Paul Darrow, Gareth
Thomas, Anneke Wills, Michael Craze, Michael O'Hare, Gary Shoefield were
all so very charming in their own unique way that I couldn't help but
really like and admire all of them even if I hadn't seen much or some of
their bodies of work." - CF95
"By the way, overall I enjoyed the convention and it's the best one I go
to. I look forward to it every year. Keep up the good work, the good guests
and may next year be even better!!" - CF95
"Be proud of yourselves. Visions is the best convention series I've been to
in years. It is of superior quality. I hope to be coming to Chicago for
years to come and the Hyatt O'Hare is an excellent location." - CF95
"Organizing a convention must be a mind-bending chore, but obviously a
labor of love. Thanks so very much to all of you for your continuing
efforts. You make *my* weekend an event I look forward to *all year long*!
Thanks Visions. Live Long and Prosper!" - CF95
"Every year Visions gets better and better!" - CF95
"I'm impressed with how well-run everything was." - CF95
"Excellent con -- great guests -- good fun!" - CF95
"Brian Blessed - finally! He was GREAT! I am so glad you stuck with him and
didn't give up long ago! Wow, this was his first convention. Thank you for
all of your work in making these conventions possible. They are the
highlight of our year. We really appreciate everything you do each year to
make each convention as enjoyable as possible! It was a great idea to
invite New Adventures authors. Paul Cornell and Kate Orman were fun and
interesting." - CF95
"I'm sure you've heard many complaints but I hope you heard the compliments
too. You've created an atmosphere where the convention attendees feel free
to ask questions in the panels, selected guests who interact well with the
audience and do not seem to mind signing endless autographs or, in some
cases, the same question just asked differently time and again. Thanks to
your staff for making mee feel more like a "real" person even while
standing in line. Good luck for next year." - CF95
"I would just like to say that being it was my first year at Visions, I
have no past to compare it to. Yet I'm happy to say it ran smooth enough
for me to say I'll be back and happy to bring friends!!" - CF95
"I had a terrific time. I really appreciate all the effort that you all put
in to make this happen every year. Keep up the great work! It is really
appreciated." - CF95
"For all the business we bring to the hotel, you would think they would
bend over backwards to help us. We seem to be pre-empted for anything the
hotel wants to have." - CF95
"This is the best-run con I've ever attended. I've been here five of six
times and will continue to attend because I enjoy myself here and I'm
completely confident that you will provide a good time for all who attend;
the guests, the dealers and the fans." - CF95
