Mary Hobein's Mystery Photos

Can you help me identify the people in these photographs? They were given to me many years ago by my father's siblings. Please let me know if you recognize any of these people. I also would like to get informed opinions about the approximate dates that these pictures could have been taken, perhaps based on clothing styles.

New Jersey Woman

Since this picture was taken in New Jersey or New York (R&R studios, 152-154 W. 23rd St., NY, and Market & Washington Sts., Newark), I assume that this is a member of the Rappleyea family. I have a picture taken at the same studio of Richard Rappleyea. My guess is that this photograph is of Mary Jospehine Rappleyea (1847-1916), sister of Richard T. Rappleyea. Can anyone confirm this? He also had a sister Katie and an adopted sister named Cordelia, who married a Mr. John Hay.

New Jersey Man

The picture of this man was taken at the same place as the New Jersey woman. It is labeled "Richard Rappleyea", but is it Richard Thomas Rappleyea (1849-1915) or his father, Richard R. Rappleyea (1814-1884)? Richard Thomas was living in Chicago by 1879 when he was 30 years old. This man looks older than that.

The Sommerville Women

This photo apparently came from Louisa Sommerville's possession. Louisa arrived in the U.S. alone in 1867 at age 12 (!), perhaps as a servant or mother's helper. The picture was taken in Dublin, (see scan of reverse side on the large version). The style of the dress on the left is mid-1860s. Are these relatives, perhaps her mother and grandmother?

"Aunt Annies's Grandmother"

This appears to be a copy of an older photo that the Andrews family ordered from F.W.Felt Photography shop at 215 East Chicago Avenue in Chicago. It is labelled "No. 88 Andrews; 16x20 Cardboard New York copy; Aunt Annie's grandmother" in three different handwritings. Aunt Annie is Annie Godow Andrews, daughter of Sophia Schmidt Godow Henschel; her godmother was Caroline Godow. What was her grandmother's name?

Bearded Man

This picture was taken at Gentzel Photographer's on 659 Lincoln Avenue in Chicago. I have pictures of Sophie and William Kessler that were taken at this same place. I also have pictures of Fred Voss, Henry Charles and Dora Hobein, Annie and Howard Andrews, John and Mary Oswald, and William and Minnie Kuester. None of the men look like this man. Could it be James Hughes (husband of Friederike "Eurika" Godow) or a son of one of the above couples?

Woman in Black

This picture was taken at Valteich Photographer's at 292 East North Avenue in Chicago near Mohawk Street. Could this be Friederike Godow Hughes or a daughter of one of the Godow sisters?

Young Woman in a Lacey Dress

This picture was taken at Gibson Photographer, corner of Wabash and Adams in Chicago. Could this be a daughter of Friederike Godow Hughes or one of the Godow sisters? I don't have a clue!
