John Candy is comfortably in character as a ne're-do-well
uncle who is called to care for two nieces and a nephew. The
kids transform his rough demeanor and he emerges as an
effective surrogate parent. The predictable picture begins
with good intentions, but the slob humor and the sitcom
material eventually wear thin. John Hughes, who is most at
home with teen social comedies, directs with an unsteady
hand. Also with Jean Kelly and Gaby Hoffman.
